Seeking a career in Marketing/Communications? East Kent Mencap is looking for a Communications Officer, with a relevant qualification and/or at least one year’s experience, to join our successful and expanding charity. This role requires a confident and enthusiastic individual with the ability to develop and maintain media and communication resources promoting the work of East Kent Mencap. Main duties:

Reports to Fundraising Manager

Create and manage promotional material for services, social events and projects

Raise social profile of EKM via social media; Facebook & Twitter, establishing & maintaining further platforms (Google+, Flickr, LinkedIn, Instagram)

Maintain and develop the website

Prepare and follow up articles for regional media, highlighting successes & appeals of organisation and disability related issues, forming good relations with press.

Liaise with printers to produce cost effective, high quality materials.

Design & write annual review & quarterly newsletter

Build and maintain good relationships with other teams to understand their communications needs and response appropriately

Work closely with the Fundraising Officer to share information

Working with external professionals to deliver projects including film makers, photographers and web designers

Network in third & social sectors, project workers, partner organisations, dignitaries, local councillors & businesses.

Record agreed outcomes and outputs from fundraising activities

Develop and maintain a database of contacts using the EKM database

Attend some evening and weekend commitments

Recruit and organise volunteers within the team where appropriate

Work within EKM’s quality management system following all policies and procedures.

Required Skills/ Qualifications:

High standard of general education (A levels or equivalent)

At least one years working experience or relevant degree

Demonstrable ability to use Microsoft Office (word, excel, outlook, access)

Knowledge of databases and spreadsheets

Willingness to undertake further training

Good design skills and the ability to use or learn to use design packages to create materials

Knowledge of social media - twitter, facebook, google plus etc

High numeracy and literacy

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, including the ability to listen actively and match communication to the needs of the recipient

Ability to work on own initiative and take responsibility for own actions and behaviour.

Good time management skills and ability to prioritise

Ability to work as a team member

Attention to detail

Nice to have:

Understanding of learning disabilities

Driver/clean driving licence

Experience with Google Adwords

Experience using editing/design software (Photoshop/Canva)

Photography Skills

Understanding of Hootsuite
