Our client are looking for an experience Payroll and Pensions Supervisor to join their busy team on a temporary basis.

The post holder will be responsible to the Payroll & Pensions Manager for the efficient and effective operation of the College Payroll & Pension functions in accordance with the organisations' and Statutory requirements.

This includes supervising direct reports, prioritising workload to meet deadlines, ensuring appropriate attention to detail, resolving queries and dealing with a wide cross section of organisations' staff.

Key Tasks

Line Management

* Supervise Payroll staff and deputise for the Payroll & Pension Manager as needed, review work schedules and ensure appropriate cover.

* Responsible for the monitoring, performance evaluation and development of direct reports.

* Deal with any day-to-day service quality and overall resource allocation and prioritisation issues.

Maintenance of payroll records and the payroll system

* The timely and accurate input of payroll amendments, checking of input, calculation of pay adjustments, maintenance of payroll records and assisting in the maintenance of the payroll bureau application, including the updating of background parameters.

* Supporting the best practice use of the system.

Processing of monthly payroll and pension returns

* Responsible for the running of the pay process, including BACS and costing creation, production of payroll reports, checking the payroll and timely and accurate reconciliation of payroll balances on the general ledger. Collating the data for the pension companies.

Providing advice and responding to staff queries

* Primary point of contact for provision of advice to employees on matters relating to pay and to statutory and other deductions; resolving queries as appropriate

* Liaison with External Organisations, the HR Systems and HR Team as appropriate.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the above, the following is expected of the post holder;

* Maintain all-round payroll expertise.

* Maintain detailed knowledge of the statutory requirements including those relating to payments through the payroll; salary sacrifice, national insurance and PAYE and undertaking CPD as required.

* Maintain an appropriate level of technical knowledge and will develop and maintain a sufficient level of skill to utilise standard job related computer applications (Northgate ResourceLink and Agresso) and proficiency with the appropriate MS Office applications.

* The duties listed are not exhaustive and may be varied from time to time as dictated by the changing needs of the organisation and the post holder may be required to work at any of the locations at which the business is conducted.

Internal and external relationships

The following list is not exhaustive and the post holder will be required to liaise with;

All comapny employees, Human Resources, Finance staff, USS, SAUL, Benefits Agency and HMRC.

The successful candidate will have -

* Educated to GSCE level or equivalent - Essential

* Holder of professional payroll qualification - Desirable

Skills and Abilities

* Excellent administrative skills - Essential

* Proficient user of MS Office applications - Essential

* A good understanding of computerised payroll systems and principles - Essential

* Ability to analyse, interpret, reconcile and communicate complex payroll issues - Essential

* Ability to manage staff effectively- Essential

* Excellent attention to detail - Essential

* Excellent communication and customer service skills - Essential

* Ability to work flexibly as a member of a team - Essential

* Strong time management skills, ability to meet deadlines - Essential


- Good working knowledge and experience of payroll supervisory work in a large or complex organisation - Essential

- Proven experience of pension administration - Essential

- Specific knowledge of USS and SAUL - Essential

- Knowledge of current payroll and pensions legislative and compliance requirements- Essential

- Experience of Northgate Resourcelink or similar payroll software - Desirable

- Experience of the HE sector - Desirable
