Graduate Electronics Design Engineer

£28,000 + Profit share bonus

My client is a specialist electronics manufacturing firm manufacturing custom built pulse generation and imaging equipment. Originally founded by a small group of university physicists who saw a gap in the technology capability of imagers and high speed pulse generators, they are a fairly established business with over thirty years’ track record in production of very unique electronics equipment.

The products they make are custom built, their speed and accuracy is well known in the industry and enables them to undertake applications no other products can. The pulse generation equipment varies depending on the task the client needs it for, but some products can produce electric pulses at intervals of a small fraction of a nanosecond. Separately, the imaging technology operates along similar principals and also have the typical USP is speed, with extremely fast shutter times, however they typically have many high tech features. The products are used in a variety of industries from medical and manufacturing, the firm have even designed imaging products to be used to probe in extreme conditions far underneath the Antarctic ice sheet. However the biggest single application of their products is within the energy industry, particularly nuclear power. Sometimes the products use non-conventional electronics and they have developed a variety of techniques for producing fast and high voltage signals. The majority of the technology used is analogue, but a large proportion of the products will have components using digital technology and some embedded software.

I am recruiting for a Graduate Electronics Design Engineer to work from their office in Oxfordshire. You will have graduated with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electronic engineering or physics and want to begin a professional career in electronics. As they are a small business the work is very varied and you will get a lot of experience and training in areas ranging from design, production, research and development, testing, documentation, procurement and client exposure. Overall you will be involved in projects from initial specification, design, production and all the way to the final shipment to the client.

Essential Requirements:

* Minimum of 2.1 degree or equivalent, either bachelor’s or master’s, in electronic engineering or related

* Interest in and good general knowledge of physics

* Understanding of analogue and digital electronics hardware, including understanding the theory of PCB design

* Hands on work designing and building electronic equipment, using both analogue and digital technology (experience from personal projects, employment or project/ lab work from university as long as significant)

* Some programming or coding ability

* Attention to detail and able to effectively troubleshoot

* Excellent timekeeping and able to work to independently deadlines

Previous experience of the below is desirable but not essential:

* High voltage techniques up to 20Kv

* High speed GHz digital electronics (PECL, CML)

* Designing and prototyping electronics using RF and microwave technology

* Real time embedded programming (ARM Cortex, Forth)

* Python

* FPGA programming (VHDL)

* Mechanical engineering design including using 2D and 3D CAD

* Electro-optics/ lasers

* X-ray framing cameras / Streak cameras

* Pulse generation electronics equipment

It’s an excellent opportunity for a hard working physics or electronics engineering graduate who wants to begin a career in design engineering, production and research. In exchange for your hard work I can offer the chance to work with world experts in field, career development and a unique long term career opportunity including sponsorship towards chartered engineering status.
