Structural Engineer

General Background:

Burgess Roughton Consulting Engineers are a small/medium sized practice providing multi-disciplinary services in areas including Structural and Civil Engineering, Building Structures, Highways and Bridges. We operate throughout the North West (and occasionally further afield) from our offices in Kendal, close to the Lake District National Park. This is a permanent position within our Structural Engineering team which will suit an ambitious and talented Structural Engineer seeking to advance their career.

You will be required to undertake the following tasks:

  • Assist and carry out structural designs in steel, RC, masonry, timber, and foundations.
  • Liaise with clients, project teams and local authorities.
  • Work closely with other members of the team (in-house or external).
  • Represent the practice – we are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated engineer wanting to progress their career.

We have successfully delivered a wide range of projects for our Clients. We have an expanding workload and now require another capable and experienced engineer. You will be responsible for managing all aspects to successfully deliver your projects. This will include design, some drawing work, client liaison and working with other staff.

Principal Responsibilities:

Prepare structural design in all conventional materials and experience is also required with foundations (including piles).

Take a global view of structural design on any project, identifying potential problems and solutions and provide advice to clients on structural options.

Handling of entire projects through to completion, including client liaison, attendance at meetings and ensuring drawings are prepared satisfactorily.

Confident, clear, professional able to represent the firm convincingly at meetings and on the telephone.

Clear and concise writing skills: e-mails, letters, reports etc.


The right candidate will assist the growth of the business, and there is potential for advancement to Director level.

Qualifications and Experience:

Minimum qualification - Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering

Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in structural design, and either Chartered or heading for Chartered status.
