The joint Department of Pathology (Histopathology, Cytology, Mortuary and Biorepository) & Immunology based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary has a vacancy for a full time BMS4.

This is a key post within the department and the structure of the Laboratory Medicine Clinical Unit. It is banded at 8D and remunerated on the NHS Scotland AfC salary scale for 2018/19, £70,657 – £86,532.The department, based on a single integrated laboratory site at ARI, covers Pathology and Immunology services for NHS Grampian but also, in the case of these services, NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland, a joint population of approximately 550,000. ARI is one of the 4 teaching hospitals in Scotland and the department has close links to both of the cities universities; the University of Aberdeen, and the Robert Gordon University.

RGU is our local education provider for the integrated co-terminus Biomedical Science honours degree to which we contribute extensively in terms of lecturing and work placement activities and from which most of our new generations of scientists graduate. We are a progressive modern department and are in the final stage of awarding a comprehensive Managed Service Contract which will provide the equipment, servicing and reagent requirements the laboratory clinical unit needs for the next 10 years. We are currently in the process of piloting Digital Pathology with a planned program of expansion of this technology.

In coming years we hope to progress a new Laboratory Information System, and are on the local plans for a new mortuary build (currently in the early planning stage) followed by a new laboratory build (projected to coincide with our next MSC procurement process).Pathology and Immunology, like all the departments in the clinical unit, currently hold full UKAS accreditation status. The applicant will be expected to be an experienced HCPC registered scientist of some standing with the qualifications one would expect for such a role, at least masters degree level, a chartered scientist, with a qualification in management (or demonstrable equivalence). Evidence of successful participation in CPD and a knowledge of the services that are to be managed are required, as well as the proven leadership skills. This is a large complex department of approximately 110 staff with an overall budget of £7.8 million. The ability to manage change with a vision of the future incorporating regional working and shared services, and the enhanced roles of scientists in our departments’ future is a key requirement.
