Orkney Islands Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner to the post of Head Teacher at Glaitness School.
Orkney lies eight miles north of the Scottish mainland and is the smallest local authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a community of about 21,850 residents and among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational and recreational facilities, a community spirit, and an exceptional quality of life with reasonably priced housing.
Glaitness School is one of two primary schools situated in the town of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. It offers provision for children aged 3 – 12 who live in the catchment area of the north-west sector of the town and the adjacent rural area. The school is also the enhanced resource school for primary aged children with moderate to complex additional support for learning needs and provides for pupils from different catchment areas in Orkney whose needs cannot be fully met within their own local school. Across the school there is a mixture of mainstream and supported class provision. In addition, Glaitness offers two-year-old early learning and childcare provision for eligible families in Kirkwall.
Glaitness School promotes an inclusive approach towards all aspects of the life and work of the school and are committed to delivering high quality learning and teaching to all children who attend the school. Their Vision Statement is \"Be All You Can Be\".
The current school roll for session 2018/19 is 179, including 19 in supported classes and 78 in the Early Learning and Childcare setting. There are 7 mainstream classes from P1-7 and a range of different supported classes to meet children’s additional support needs.
Glaitness has a large and committed staff team of about 70 staff, many of whom are part time. The Senior Leadership Team includes a Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, Business Manager and Early Learning and Childcare Manager. There are two Principal Teachers; one for Support for Learning and the other with a remit relating to learning and teaching and curriculum.
We are looking for an energetic and ambitious Head Teacher to continue to lead, grow and develop the school for learning and teaching in the 21st century. As a senior manager for the local authority, will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of education in Orkney as a whole and you may be required to participate in and/or lead whole authority developments.
The successful applicant will need to be GTCS registered and be able to demonstrate that they have, through both experience and professional development, met the criteria in the Standards for Leadership and Management.

Salary is based on point 7 of the Headteacher Spine of the SNCT Salary Tables and includes a Distant Islands Allowance. We offer a generous relocation package.
