Salary Range: £39,370 - £64,806 (Dependent on Skills and Experience)

This vacancy is open to all UK Power Networks permanent and fixed-term employees as well as contractors, agency workers and external candidates.

Job Purpose:

The Operational Engineer role is to undertake HV/LV switching and maintenance of UKPNS and client owned assets on the Docklands Light Railway and Canary Wharf HV/LV networks whilst ensuring that there is no disruption to the electricity supply. The Operational Engineer is also responsible for the management of Technicians and contractors where required to complete the maintenance activities in a safe and efficient manner.

Although based at the site above and principally working in that area the candidate will be expected to develop their skills and authorisations to be able to work on any of the projects within UKPN Services. Certain areas of work will require the successful candidate to attain appropriate clearances and passes.

To qualify for the higher Band D a candidate must have as a minimum an HNC and be active as a 33kV SAP. An 11kV SAP may reach Band D only if they have the HNC qualification and the nature of their job role requires them to work on multiple client networks, across the UKPN Services portfolio, on protection systems similar to those found on 33 kV working.

Principal Accountabilities:

* Maintenance of clients HV/LV networks in multi tenanted buildings at Canary Wharf and other sites within London

* Maintenance of the HV/LV UKPNS owned assets at 11kV and 400v as well as 750V DC traction switchgear

* Maintenance of the HV and LV Control and Protection Systems

* Maintenance of specialist equipment including Transformer Rectifiers

* Operational duties and issuing of safety documentation in accordance with the UKPN Distribution Safety Rules

* Ensuring compliance with CDM and UK Power Networks Health and Safety policies

* Developing site specific H,S & E procedures

* Compliance with UK Power Networks quality policies

* Operate and update Asset database in respect of project activities

* Responsible for both reactive and planned maintenance activities

* Carry out fault investigation and repairs as required.

* Modifying equipment and drawings to ensure the efficient operation of the substations

* Ensuring the compliance with the distribution safety rules during all activities.

* Active supervision of all contractors/staff working on site

* Undertake emergency standby duties on a call out rota basis.

Main Duties:

* Provide technical support as part of the Operations and Maintenance team

* Attend and contribute to team briefings, give feed-back where necessary

* Identify potential project risks/opportunities (raise awareness within team / company)

* Proactively seeking continuous improvement

* Required to participate in a standby rota and work additional hours as required to maintain the supplies to the Docklands Light Railway and Commercial Buildings.

* Working unsocial hours when required to respond to system faults

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

* HV Authorised Person status essential.

* Senior Authorised Person status or Control Engineer benficial

* Experience in distribution and traction systems for 11kV, 400V and 750V DC

* Medical & Drugs and Alcohol screening

* Educated to HNC level qualification or equivalent in Electrical Engineering

* Knowledge of traction and distribution HV Systems

* Relevant Safety Qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH

* Knowledge of Building Services Systems

* Ability to read drawings and understand content

* Aptitude to manage contractors

* Ability to work in different environments, including confined spaces and at height

* A thorough understanding of all statutory requirements, including HS&E regulations.

* Demonstrable track record within an Electrical distribution environment

* Excellent analytical, organisation & planning skills

* Ability to identify problems, understand key issues and investigate alternatives

* Computer literate

* Hold full driving licence
