I am looking to recruit a Project Engineer based at Gatwick airport, working for a consultancy, paying up to £50k

The Project Engineer (PE) is responsible for managing their design activities on a project or projects from inception through to handover as determined by the Lead Project Engineer (LPE) for the programme.

The PE reports into the LPE for each of the programmes they may be allocated to with a dotted line to the Project Manager.

The PE plans, coordinates and directs consultant activities in accordance with the contract, and has technical responsibilities for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating the design works within the project.

The PE works closely with LPE and Project Managers to ensure that the engineering design is executed in a cost effective, timely and efficient manner, and in accordance with GAL processes and procedures. The PE manages specific design interfaces on the project, and monitors and reports on the project’s overall engineering quality and progress.


The PE has the following accountabilities within their respective area of subject matter expertise:

Contributes to the development and sign off of the project scope to satisfy the business need and support the business case. Assists in stakeholder engagement to achieve a developed and signed off project scope.

Works closely with stakeholders to ensure that the design is compliant with GAL and other applicable standards, while executed in a cost effective, timely, efficient manner and in accordance with GAL processes and procedures.

Reviews, interprets, organizes and coordinates the design works for their respective discipline ensuring quality and compliance with GAL standards and good engineering practice.

Provides input into defining and developing the asset information requirements within the Employers Information Requirements in support of a 2D or 3D BIM environment.

Reports to the LPE on the progress and performance of engineering deliverables on assigned projects.

Participates in the technical evaluation of appointed contractors and consultants as required.

Assists the LPE and Functional Manager in the application and administering of engineering processes and procedures in order to maintain quality and control of engineering work product.

Liaises with the Engineering managers and operational representatives to obtain approval on the phasing of work to minimise disruption to the business and address operational concerns.

Works closely with construction personnel in verifying the compliance of the works against the specifications and applicable standards during construction via onsite inspections, hold and witness points.

Monitors, coordinates and provides technical input to any design changes throughout the construction and handover stages.

Assists in the commissioning, handover and integration of project deliverables into the operation by providing witness testing against commissioning plans and technical specifications, verifying record and as-built information, Health & Safety files, signing off defects, etc.

Reviews and manages the close-out of any technical information required for handover, provides technical input to any defects post-handover and support the further development of the GAL Technical Standards.

What You have to Offer:

Engineer with experience in the engineering and construction of medium to large infrastructure projects.

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Construction Management within the Civil/Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic Systems and Controls, Public Health & Building Services, or Architectural discipline or equivalent.

Extensive relevant industry experience gained through on the job experience of large, multidiscipline construction projects and professionally qualified or working towards such qualification.

Good knowledge of engineering and design management work planning and control methods.

Experience in complex stakeholder management and negotiation.

Good knowledge of principles, standards and practices in the engineering disciplines.

Good knowledge of related construction standards and practices and the economics involved.

Good knowledge of industry / regulatory codes and standards, and design criteria relevant to the particular discipline.

Airport development experience or significant other development experience within a multi complex stakeholder organization.

Working knowledge of basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and business planning software is a requirement.

Knowledge of application and coordination of 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools on a project. Experience in the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) software is desired.

Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication including technical writing. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrate strong personal drive and self-motivation with an energetic and proactive personal style.
