Client Facing Data Protection and Compliance Officer/Director Dundee or Edinburgh For many years Thorntons has provided advice to a range of clients (from small tech companies to large public sector bodies such as housing associations and universities) in relation to data protection. Following the introduction of GDPR, there has been an increase in demand for legal advice in relation to data, privacy and security and the firm has developed specialism and expertise in this area. Where every day is different Client demand has led to the development of our fully outsourced DPO service and DPO assist packages (further details can be provided). In developing these packages it has become clear that there is a role for an individual with compliance expertise to work alongside our lawyers in this area to deliver an excellent service and quality, expert advice to our client base. We also see the opportunity to grow this area of our business significantly. As well as being in a client facing role delivering all compliance aspects of the services that we offer, we would also see you being involved in: the roll out of training programmes internally within our business and externally to our client base; the development and use of compliance tools to support our services; and possibly attending and speaking at high profile conferences representing the firm. Thorntons also has ambition to develop a suite of compliance/consultancy services and digital tools to support the delivery of it services. You may also be involved in the development of compliance projects and services outwith GDPR relevant to our business and our clients. About you We are seeking someone working in a senior GDPR compliance role who is motivated and driven by understanding the technology and business models of our clients and contributing to their success. This is a leadership role in our business and you should be committed to building and sustaining strong client relationships, be able to work confidently in a fast paced client facing environment and have the strong communication skills necessary to work in a senior position in a multi location team. Working alongside our partners, you will play a senior role in data protection strategy and implementation for multiple clients. You will understand developing design privacy thinking, large scale implementation and how to apply risk based analysis to compliance. Your key attributes and experience will include: • Leadership experience in Data Protection/Privacy acting as or supporting a DPO; • Working in a sector with a sizeable internal or external customer base • A full understanding of, and appropriate experience, in all aspects of UK data protection law including an in-depth knowledge of the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018; • An understanding of European and international data protection law; • Ideally the CIPP/E and/or CIPM qualification(s) from the International Association of Privacy Professionals or a law degree; • An ability to quickly develop a full understanding of multiple client information systems and their data security and data protection needs. • Advising and assisting with Privacy Impact Assessments; • Advising and assisting in implementing policies and procedures tailored to GDPR; • Assisting with audits and data mapping exercises; • Dealing with data subject rights; • Design and roll of data protection training; • Experience of dealing with data subject breaches; • Drafting privacy notices; • Advising on marketing and security practices Included in a typical Thorntons package • Competitive Salary • Investment in Training, Development and Career Advancement Opportunities • 25 days holiday (rising with length of service) plus 7 public holiday • Contributory Pension Scheme • Healthcare Cash Plan • Corporate Discounts • Cycle to Work The closing date for applications is 9am on Friday 22 February 2019.
