The Role:

To assist the leader of Blades Knowledge Area in developing products, services and solutions in the area of wind turbine rotor aeroelasticity, delivering projects and developing a research profile that will feed into the R&D strategy of the Knowledge Area, generating public funding and commercial activity in this area.


- Ensure up to date sector knowledge and technical on the relevant technology areas.

- Provide sound technical support to Senior/Lead Engineers and PMs to successfully deliver projects safely, to schedule, quality and cost in accordance with the partner needs and contract requirements

- Support initiate concepts and proposals ensuring that technical scope, scheduling and resourcing issues are fully addressed.

- In position to inform Lead/Senior Engineers of the technology and innovation opportunities within the sector and support the developments of strategies and project ideas


- Be a key customer facing research engineer within the Blades Knowledge Area. This area concerns the blade component, and disciplines associated with its design, aeroelastic modelling of the rotor and wind turbine at different detail levels (multibody to FSI), blade structure and aerodynamics.

- Develop innovative products and services related to FSI and aeroelastic modelling, for wind, wave and tidal technology

- Ensure the technical and scientific quality of the deliverables related to aeroelasticity engineering

- Ensuring project technical activities are delivered in compliance project management processes and regulatory standards, processes and procedures.

- Look to work closely with key R&D stakeholders shaping and delivering projects, managing external dependencies and interfaces.

- Comply with policies and procedures in terms of SHEQ, project management, risk and asset management. Maintain a high standard of health & safety awareness through encouraging safe behaviours with colleagues, contractors and other stakeholders.

- Identifying opportunities for improvements on project delivery, resource availability for the RDI project portfolio and the business in general.

- Publish high quality research publications (i.e. journal, conference proceedings, etc.) and represent the company at technical and scientific forums and conferences

- Participate proactively in the activities of multi- discipline teams, the teams being a mix of core team members and specialists working through a flexible matrix structure.

The Senior Research Aeroelasticity Engineer shall ensure that the business maintains its position as a focal point for the sector and that the quality of deliverables and projects will be higher than the market standards.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

- A degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or a related discipline

- PhD/EngD in relevant technology area is desirable

- Demonstrate good knowledge and experience with wind turbine loads and dynamics simulation tools (Bladed, Fast, Flex, Focus6,Hawc2)

- Good experience in aeroelasticity applied to wind turbines, with a focus on rotor/blade high fidelity aeroelastic modelling.

- Experience in design and implement wind turbine digital twin modelling or model base health/life analysis is desirable

- Experience in CFD covering unsteady aerodynamics and FSI (Ansys) is a bonus

- Experience in the delivery of R&D projects in Academic and/or RTO environment.

- Experience producing high quality research papers is desirable

- Industrial experience and Professional Accreditation would be a bonus

- High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.

- Ability to work to tight deadlines and within a highly pressured environment.
