Chailey Heritage Foundation has been changing the lives of young people with disabilities since 1903. Today, we are one of the UK’s leading centres for children/young people with complex neurodisabilities and looking to expand our Board.
Following a period of sustained growth, diversification, and a governance review, as well as part of our succession planning, we are now looking to appoint a new Trustee with experience in finance, audit and risk management.
About the role
We are seeking people to join our Board who are able to commit the time and energy to help our Charity pursue its next phase of development. We are particularly interested in strong team players.
The Charity has a highly experienced and engaged Trustee Board and you will play a vital role in governance and shaping the strategic direction of the Charity. The Charity has an experienced Finance Director who reports directly to the Chief Executive and to the Trustees' Finance Committee. We are a Company limited by Guarantee and therefore our Trustees are also company directors.
We recognise the enormous benefits of a diverse Trustee Board and encourage applications from a range of backgrounds.
We are looking for a new Trustee to join the Trustees' Finance Committee, which is a sub committee of the main Board, and has responsibility for:
- annual budget setting and 3 year forward planning for the charity
- overseeing and presentation of the Annual Report & Accounts to the Board
- monitoring the Charity's financial performance and cash flow
- financial risks
- the Charity's assets and reserves
- approval of financial policies and procedures
- procurement of financial services (audit, investment management and banking)
- oversight of insurances
We are looking for someone who has extensive financial management experience and a good understanding of financial strategy and risk management. The total income for the charity is £11.1m.
We are not expecting you to have been involved with a charity before but we would like you to bring all your expertise and experience.
We are a charity not a business but we apply business principles and we are looking for someone to bring their expertise and experience from the wider business world to our charity.

Our charity, founded in 1903, has a long history of helping young people with disabilities.
It is really important that our charity is sustainable, strong and can thrive in a challenging economic climate and changing market place for our services. Strong financial management is essential for us to continue to deliver high quality, value-for-money services to our vulnerable beneficiaries and we rely on our Trustees to bring all their expertise to advise the Board.
All our Trustees are 'ambassadors' and we expect them to represent the charity and spread the word about the work we do for young people with complex disabilities.

Our Trustees are friendly, committed, active and professional and bring their own expertise. They are all valued members of the Board.
The Board meets in East Sussex four times a year (usually February, April, July and December for 2 hours) plus one strategic planning day. We would also ask you to join our Trustees' Finance Committee, which meets five times a year (some meetings are up to 4 hours each)
