Job Purpose:

The Network Modelling Engineer is responsible for the management of the EHV and 132kV electricity model across all three licensed DNO areas of UK Power Networks, carry out day-to-day update activities, provide technical support and training to UK Power Networks users and develop the system to satisfy Distribution Grid Code obligations and requirements.

As member of the core network modelling team and located within the Asset Management structure, the jobholder is part of a wider group of Engineers that carries out operational planning and network development functions in UKPN. This arrangement will facilitate the transition of this function, provide more immediate technical support and focus development in key areas as defined by the business strategy.

Since 2010 UKPN have been using DigSilent PowerFactory as the power system package for the EHV and 132kV network in the three licensed areas of EPN, LPN and SPN. The network model has a full representation of the network, from the National Grid interface at 400kV thought to HV and used by circa ten teams across five UKPN Directorates.

This role requires a strong level of understanding of network operation and planning, proficiency in modelling packages and the ability to build working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Principal internal interfaces include Asset Management, Network Operations, Finance, Capital Programme and Strategy and Regulation Directorates. Key external interfaces are National Grid Transmission Owner and System Operator, Network Rail, Distribution Network Operators and other utilities operating in the region.

Principal Accountabilities:

Responsible for the management and development of the EHV and 132kV electricity network model across all three licensed DNO areas of UK Power Networks, including the interface with National Grid Transmission and customer networks to a achieve a high quality standard, this role involves cooperative working in a multi-discipline team environment and focusses on the following areas:

* Interface with UKPN users on all aspects related to DigSilent PowerFactory. Address requests from users for the creation of asset types, network variations or other changes to the model. Provide training to UKPN users from introductory to advanced topics;

* Interface with external stakeholders in all aspects related to UKPN network modelling, including National Grid, Distribution Network Operators, Transport for London, Network Rail, Universities and research entities;

* Coordinate all resources linked with DigSilent PowerFactory including the offshore team, reporting and development resources;

* Support the development of the network model scenarios and forecasts to support UKPN RIIO-ED1 and ED2 business plan, deliver improved performance and achieve UKPN DSO readiness;

* Identify and populate any missing identifiers required for generating LTDS, week 28 and statement of works reports;

* Support the creation of network schematic diagrams in accordance with the samples provided for each of the three DNO. Develop scripts to automate the production of data tables and diagrams for each region.

* Carry out power system studies and network analysis on the EHV-132kV network to assess the impact and/or opportunities of external interventions such as modifications at transmission network level;

* Carry out quality control activities to verify the integrity of the network model, project variations and performance prior to release. Capture and log all changes to the model and provide best practice quality control;

* Review DigSilent package to keep the system aligned with National Grid and the latest DigSilent versions. Address issues regarding performance of network model and developed scripts;

* Carry out the required actions as per the short-medium term plan for the development of DigSilent PowerFactory and its functionalities such as PI Interface, Curtailment assessment and Timed Connections. Coordinate the plan with the managers panel and in consultation within key UKPN representatives;

* Closely work with DigSilent application support team to resolve technical issues related to network model and functionalities. Manage DigSilent users and permissions as per regulatory requirements;

* Maintain documentation, procedures and help cards for users;

* Coordinate HV network modelling so that modifications are replicated in the respective models so that UKPN Engineers can understand the dynamic behaviour of the network and identify opportunities between different voltage levels;

Knowledge, qualifications and experience:

The varied nature of the team activities benefits from drawing skills from different backgrounds. In addition to the following:

* Academic degree level in Engineering or equivalent professional experience in an Engineering environment;

* A good understanding of the principles of power engineering and distribution network operation;

* Proficient in the use of electricity network modelling packages, with high level of understanding of technical aspects including power flow, fault levels calculations, contingency analysis and voltage profile management.

The successful candidate should possess knowledge of the following topics:

* Knowledge of design and operation of UK distribution systems at all voltage levels. Understanding of the principles of electricity network assets such as transformers, switchgear, cables, overhead lines, protection, substation design and others;

* Network Modelling skills - Introductory level (Use of network modelling software, loads flow and fault level calculations);

* Network Modelling skills - Intermediate (Contingency analysis, network creation or alteration, generation studies & complex modelling);

* Network Modelling skills - Advanced (Scripting in python or DPL, Stability analysis, RMS);

* Awareness of Distribution and Grid Code requirements to network planning and National Grid compliance, including information exchange such as week 24/42, Long Terms Development Statement and model data exchange;

* Awareness of industry related Standards/Regulations and understanding of the requirements of Engineering Recommendations, in particular P2/6, G5/4, G59, G74, G99, P18, P28 and P29;

* Understanding requirements and analysis for low carbon innovation and technology projects including the provision of energy storage, smart electric vehicle infrastructure and micro grids.

The successful candidate should possess some of the following qualities:

* Good team working skills, providing technical training and support to colleagues in the use of the network modelling;

* Good report writing skills and conveying complex issues on paper. Confidence to be able to represent the team and present technical arguments to both internal and external audiences;

* Being able to interpret and understand complex information, to problem solve and deliver high quality work;

* Demonstrate a practical and results-orientated approach by virtue of actions undertaken, organising and controlling tasks;

Should you not possess the required skills or competencies listed above, there may be an opportunity to appoint at a lower grade while these are developed.
