Quarriers North Ayrshire Dementia Befriending Service aims to promote a service, in and out of the home, for people living with dementia living in the North Ayrshire area which promotes empowerment, confidence and wellbeing.

This work is supported with funding from the Life Changes Trust. The Trust is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

Would you like to be a befriender and make a real difference to people’s lives?

We need people from all over North Ayrshire whatever your age. The role is to support people with dementia with activities they enjoy or any hobbies they may have.

Your support will help to reduce any isolation and loneliness, provide respite for families and relieve pressure and enable them to care for the person with dementia so that they can remain at home as long as possible.

Just a few hours a week can make a real difference, not only to the lives of people with dementia, but to your life too.

MAIN TASKS:

The Dementia Befriender Volunteers are carefully matched with the person they visit and will visit a person with dementia on a regular basis.

The volunteers provide support with agreed social and recreational activities.

They build up good relationships with the person with dementia and their family.

Accurate and legible records of visits are maintained.

You would liaise with and report to the Befriending Coordinator on a regular basis including any changes or concerns regarding the service user.

REQUIRED SKILLS, QUALITIES & EXPERIENCE:

No special qualifications or knowledge are required for this role although you should be patient, reliable and have good communication and listening skills.

If you have some understanding of dementia and how it affects people this would be useful if not, a willingness to learn.

WHERE & WHEN:

The time and place can be agreed with you and the service user

COMMITMENT REQUIRED:

We hope you can commit for at 6 months to enable a relationship to be established and gain the most out of the role.

TRAINING & SUPPORT PROVIDED:

You will gain worthwhile training, skills and experience. You will also have continual support from the Befriending Coordinator.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
