James Rodriguez has admitted it would be "a dream" to play for Real Madrid after reports again linked the Colombia star with a big-money transfer to the Spanish capital.

The 23-year-old scored six goals in just five matches for Colombia and leads the goalscoring charts at the World Cup, despite the fact his country were knocked out by Brazil at the quarter-final stage.

His performances have attracted interested from a host of European clubs, with the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly courting the Monaco playmaker. It is believed that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti will move for Rodriguez if Angel Di Maria leaves the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Rodriguez, who joined the ambitious Ligue 1 outfit last summer in a €45 million (£35.8 million) deal from FC Porto, refused to hide his ambition to play for the Champions League winners.

"Playing for Real Madrid is my life's dream," he told Marca.

"It'd be a privilege to play alongside so many stars. If it happened, I'd enjoy it to the max. It's really flattering to know that a club of Real Madrid's stature is interested in me. It'd be a dream to join the club of my dreams.

"I have a great deal of respect for other clubs and admire the good football they play, but ultimately Real Madrid are Real Madrid. I've always had a thing for them, like I said before."

It has been reported that Monaco will only let the highly-rated forward leave the French club if their asking price of €80 million (£63.6 million) is met.

Rodriguez hinted that it may be time to leave after thanking the club's hierarchy for helping further his career, but admitted he would not try to force his exit from the club.

He added: "I'm eternally grateful to [club president] Dimitry [Rybolovlev] and [vice-president] Vadim Vasilyev for the opportunity they gave me. The club is building something big.

"Obviously it would be a dream for me to play for Real Madrid, but I will always respect my current club, who will have the last word on the matter".
