What experience you'll need

You’ll need a large amount of web application development experience, having a wealth of previous work to be able to show off as examples. Ideally, you’ll be experienced with Groovy and Grails but a really strong Java developer that’s happy to make the transition is also great. You’ll be able to work with both relational and NoSQL databases and will have strong knowledge of software and web development best practices and principles. Experience in leading and/or mentoring other developers/engineers is crucial as the expanding team will be grown around you. On top of this, you will need to have been part of the recruitment process before, having conducted interviews and assessed tasks/tests. You’ll need to have worked in an Agile set-up, including Scrum and Kanban.

What you'll be doing

Your core responsibility will be providing direction for the design, implementation and delivery of all software features. It will be your technical expertise that will be leading the team throughout the development process. Reviewing development and testing processes will be your responsibility, as you’ll be helping the team through mentoring and training where needed. You’ll be an integral part of the business’ architectural sessions, looking to improve the quality and stability of all internal systems. As this will be a new team, focussing on providing a non-London based tech hub for the company, you’ll be identifying talent needs in the business and helping to lead the local hiring process. You’ll have a strong level of autonomy, covering everything from reviewing local staff to ensuring that the business’ values are upheld at all times. You will be the first line of contact when collaborating with the other teams on large projects, helping to estimating complexity and cost.
