Navigating an advert for a Software Development role can be a bit of a minefield. Whether its copy and pasted job descriptions or badly written sales pitches, the majority of them fail to do one simple thing...

Explain what the company are actually looking for!

With that in mind, I wanted to take you on a journey...

That journey begins with a Travel Management Company in Central Manchester (5 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly) who are looking to expand their Software Development team by hiring a Principal Software Developer. They are a niche organisation with a Global feel, operating a rewarding company culture focused on its employees... in other words, you won't be expected to work 12 hour days, 7 days per week and will be offered tailored career progression from the get-go.

That journey continues with their requirements... which are pretty detailed. So rather than copying and pasting them into this job ad, I am going to strip everything back and focus on the key things that they are looking for from any prospective applicants:

* Travel Industry Experience - Experience with systems such as Sabre, Amadeus or Galileo would be ideal but isn't essential. Also, industry experience from either a Travel Agency, Airline or Travel Aggregator would certainly boost your application.

* Agile/Scrum - They operate an Agile development team following core processes such as Scrum, so previously experience working in a similar environment would be highly desirable.

* .NET Programming - This organisation is Microsoft-aligned, with the majority of their code written in .NET. This role will involve core C# programming as well as a small amount of legacy work in VB.NET. Therefore, a full understanding of the .NET stack (ASP.NET, Web API, C#, VB.NET, SQL Server, WCF) is essential.

* Windows Desktop Apps - Two of their largest applications are based around WPF, so commercial experience building Windows Desktop Apps would be ideal. They would also look at WinForms experience, with knowledge of XAML and PRISM being a huge bonus.

* Leadership - This role will involve leadership responsibilities including driving coding standards and best practice (SOLID, DRY), implementing Agile processes and having Architectural discussions to ensure the best possible solutions are crafted. You will also engage in mentoring/coaching Junior Developers so strong communication skills are essential.

So with that being said, you are now probably thinking... 'Where does this journey end?'.

Well... that bit is entirely up to you.

If you want the journey to continue to a phone call with me, then give me a call on either or .

Alternatively, if you would prefer to send me a copy of your CV or even an inquisitive email then you can try .

However, if you would prefer to end this journey here then all I can say is thank you for reading this advert!

Anything discussed will be kept confidential.
