It is essential you are excited by DevOps and can demonstrate a clear understanding of why you want to build your career in this established but expanding area.

In terms of technology we are looking at some of the usual suspects; Linux (Ubuntu or Debian), Continuous Integration (Jenkins, Travis, GitLab etc), Version control software (Git), Virtualisation (VMware, Xen, KVM, Ganeti, Kubernetes or Docker), Cluster Management (Mesos, Marathon, Openstack or similar), Database Management with NoSQL (Riak, Redis, CouchDB) and SQL (MySQL, Postgre SQL).

The next roll out is Kubernetes so an understanding of and interest in the values and benefits of application containerisation would be a massive advantage.

There are a whole variety of other desirable skills that you will either have knowledge of or be keen to learn including Configuration Management (Puppet, Chef or CF Engine), Server and Network Monitoring (Zabbix, Nagios or SNMP), Linux High Availability (Corosync, Pacemaker or HAProxy), Web Server Configuration (Nginx or Apache) and networking skills like Cisco, Juniper, TCP/IP etc.

Occasionally there is a role out there worth enquiring about. Something enjoyable, challenging and that will make the most of your current skills and build on them. Plus of course the financial rewards of being part of cross sector product that is already well on the way to dominating this market.
