Coxswain Mechanic - Lifeboats (Temporary Until Nov. 2019)
Filey, Nr Scarborough, West Yorkshire
£25,407 - £29,891 (dependent on experience) pro rata

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We are now looking for a Coxswain Mechanic to join our lifeboat station in Filey on a temporary basis until November 2019.

Our front-line services at the RNLI are a little different and this is a sea-going role where you will lead one of our crews in directly saving lives from one of our Filey-based vessels.

The Filey lifeboat station has a rich history dating back 200 years and has seen crews decorated for bravery eight times.

Boasting both all-weather and in-shore vessels, at Filey, we have a Mersey-class all-weather lifeboat and a D-Class inflatable for in-shore rescues. Although not the most modern in our fleet, the Mersey-class provides a solid backbone with a versatile range of launching options and, with a relatively shallow draft, the ability to operate in-shore as well as in the roughest seas.

As the Coxswain Mechanic, you will specifically, be tasked with ensuring the operational effectiveness of the lifeboat station through the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.

You will make sure that both of our lifeboats are ready for launch at any time. The North Sea can be a rough working environment and so we need to make sure everything that we take to sea is in perfect working order.

When at sea, you will command our all-weather Mersey-Class lifeboat, overseeing her safe launch and recovery.

Additionally, you will work to attract and train volunteers to ensure that there are the available staff and crews to enable us to operate effectively.

Interested? To be considered, you will need:

- An RYA Yacht master certification plus CoBT operational pass out; Command of the Lifeboat and CoBT for Station Mechanic
- A marine and/or mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ level 4, or suitable experience plus CoBT Station
- A mechanic’s operational pass out
- Thorough maritime and/or engineering knowledge and the ability to command, lead a crew and safely operate and handle vessels up to 20 metres in length
- Knowledge of RNLI and/or SAR lifeboat operations
- A valid driving licence

An articulate leader, as the Coxswain Mechanic, you will also need to be hands-on in your approach with excellent communication and team building skills. Dedication and passion for the sea will also be key attributes.

Please note, the closing date for applications is the 21st May 2017.

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
