Southend-on-Sea Borough Council are currently recruiting a Family Engagement Practitioner to join this highly specialist team. You will become part of a team responsible for delivering Family Group Services, group, family and care interventions to children and families known to Children’s Social Care.

This is being offered on a full time basis on a one year fixed term contract.

The family engagement team aims to enable and encourage customers to make safe decisions independently and function in the community effectively, without the Local Authority’s interventions. The job requires you to provide professional and comprehensive casework to a caseload of children and young people appropriate to experience and capabilities.
You must ensure the highest of professional standards and good overall knowledge of relevant legislation regulation and practice methods. A central part of this is the commitment to a model of practice based on a restorative approach, with a real focus on families being empowered to make decisions about their own lives. This is supported through strength based approaches, signs of safety, systemic approaches, within Family Group Conference model. Working alongside other professionals in the Council there is a real focus on helping children in need and playing a key role in family group service conferences.

In this role, the practitioner will be exposed to working with families and children in distress or traumatised therefore FET needs someone who can demonstrate abilities for emotional resilience, self-regulation as well as supervision and reflective practice to keep their practice safe and transparent. The post requires specialist qualifications and knowledge around Child Protection, Looked After Children, Children In Need legislation, policies and practice.

As this role will require you to meet with families and agencies, you will have access to parking and be able to visit locations around the Borough. Knowledge of Care First/Liquid Logic is desirable but otherwise being familiar with Word and Outlook are required. The team are in a position to support graduates who have recently qualified in a relevant field if they hold relevant experience or those who have experienced working with the family unit in a child centred approach. To be effective in this nature of work you would be expected to be kind, approachable and confident in dealing with potentially difficult environments. An understanding and awareness of child protection and safeguarding is also key due to the service you will be working in.
