Over the next 10 years Birkbeck will undertake a significant programme of capital project work, ranging from extensive refurbishments of existing spaces to new builds in order to deliver the recently approved £150 Million estates strategy in challenging central London locations. The Project Managers will support the DDED in providing effective overall management, co-ordination and delivery of a number of projects that will contribute to meeting Birkbeck's 2023 Vision.

The job role:

To provide day to day client side leadership and management of major projects (valued at circa £5-10M). Act as the main contact for both internal clients and users and interface with various consultants and contractors to ensure that these projects are delivered to meet requirements, on time and within budget.

To ensure that the annual revenue projects that are commissioned by the College, whether controlled by the Project Managers or by externally commissioned professional consultants, are completed within the time and budgetary constraints set by the College to the satisfaction of the client department, whilst ensuring best value of the completed project.

Act as the college's primary CAD managers to oversee the collation and maintenance of detailed records of the college's space and provide reports and insight to inform the development and implementation of the Estates strategy as well as assist in the production of reports and data for all HEFCE or other bodies.

Investigate requests for revenue project work (typically ranging from £20 - £250k in value), liaise with clients to carry out feasibility studies, prepare budget estimates and then

Main Duties:

To support the DDED by providing project management leadership and support for a portfolio of projects ranging in value from the low thousands up to £5-10M

Keeping all necessary records in an acceptable format, including the use of CAFM Explorer, In Tend, AutoCAD, MS office, Business world (Finance System) and other software packages.

Prepare detailed design specifications, drawings and tenders for approved building, electrical and mechanical works projects including submissions for Building Control, Planning, including listed building consent, and OJEU compliance where necessary.
Supervise external contractors employed by the College on a day to day basis including coordinating all enabling works prior to commencement on site

Act as client project manager for projects prior to and once work commences on site, chairing and recording site meetings ensuring that projects are delivered on time, to budget and to acceptable quality performance levels.
Ensure that projects are handed over to the appropriate parties with the appropriate documentation.

Prepare detailed briefing documents to enable external consultants to submit fixed fee bids and to ensure they are designing to the College requirements.

Act as conduit and arbiter between building user (client department) and design consultants to ensure all parties are working to a common aim.

Ensure that the impact of building works on occupied College buildings is minimised at all times liaising with the Health & Safety Advisor, room bookings staff etc. to achieve this.

Person Specification:
* Extensive knowledge and experience developed from working as a client-side estates related project manager.
* Understanding of the public sector procurement process, including OJEU
* Extensive experience of 2D CAD software and ability to manage and amend floor plans
* Ability to develop detailed project specifications from first concepts.
* Ability to develop 3D images using software such as sketch up (Desirable)

* A successful track record of managing project budgets of significant value (£ millions).
* Highly developed project management, planning and organisational skills.
* Excellent contractor management skills.
* Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
* A diplomatic and effective communicator.
* Possesses the experience and confidence necessary to deputise for the DDED as required.

* Educated to degree level or equivalent
Membership of professional body e.g. RICS, RIBA etc.
