About The Role
The Manufacturing Facility of the Technology Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory has about 20 skilled craftsmen, technicians and support staff who supply mechanical manufacturing, Metrology, additive manufacture and technical procurement for RAL and other customers on the Harwell campus.
In this key role, you will lead the multi-disciplinary Manufacturing Facility Group, developing the facilities and managing/co-ordinating the work of:
- the department workshop ( five CNC VMCs, two CNC Lathes and a variety of conventional manual machines including sheet metal working equipment)
outside manufacture procurement (about £3M per year)
inspection & metrology. Including contact and non-contact CMMs and a comprehensive selection of measuring instruments
additive manufacturing (plastic and metal).
Providing customers with an efficient, high quality service, you will be responsible for the continued development of the group, including but not limited to sharing of experience and best practice, technical consulting and design support. The role includes management of the group’s delegated budget and advising senior management of the priorities to develop the facility in line with the STFC’s needs.
A key part of your responsibilities is the management of safety within the facility; this involves preparing and updating all risk assessments and procedures, and ensuring that all staff have completed training appropriate to their roles. You will also be a key part of the apprentice training scheme at RAL, advising on suitable training needs and providing training for apprentices during their work placements.
You will have a thorough understanding of production engineering and the different manufacturing processes. You must understand all core machining, fabrication and welding operations, and be able to identify the optimum process to be adopted for the efficient manufacture of any mechanical engineering component from delicate positioning devices through to bulk shielding blocks.
You will demonstrate extremely strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to lead and manage change. Experience of procurement with respect to the Public Contract Regulations would be an advantage.
