Senior Quantity Surveyor / Estimator - Principal Contractor

Maxwell Consultancy are looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor and Estimator to support our client in Glasgow. This business is going through something of a boom at the moment and there are some large and exciting projects that they are involved in currently. They can boast an impressive pipeline that will continue to boost their business over the next few years too

This position is responsible for the management of all live commercial activities post tender. A prior knowledge of managing external refurbishment contracts would offer a distinct advantage, but not essential. This is a fast-paced, high volume role that demands a committed and dedicated individual. We are ideally looking for someone who has experience working for an externals and/or refurbishment contractor as you will be expected to to be well versed in estimating these contracts, a vital part of this role.

You will need to be a highly motivated and confident individual who can deal with both operatives and Main Contractors. This is an office based position, but there will be a significant amount of site visits to be done to review progress and measure works.


  • Deliver accurate estimations for prospective contracts leading to increased work flow for the business
  • Take commercial responsibility for contract performance across the business unit to maximise both turnover and profitability.
  • Build positive relationships and influence at senior level both internally and with client.
  • Resolve any contractual disputes and seeking to raise commercial awareness within the Company
  • Encourage, mentor, and coach other members of the team around you.
  • Liaise with operational members of staff and provide assistance and guidance as required in relation to Estimating or Commercial issues.
  • Work closely with Managing Director and provide commercial advice and reports as appropriate.
  • Liaise with Commercial Director to ensure that the full commercial knowledge of a tender has been obtained at handover prior to start on site.

Key Deliverables

  • Attendance at pre-start meetings as required to understand and works within the budgets set.
  • Provide guidance on the procurement of key materials to the administration and operational team and ensure that materials are purchased within tender allowances.
  • Submission and agreement of interim applications for Payment and Final Accounts in a timely manner.
  • Chasing of interim certificates to ensure that they are received and payment is made within the contractual terms.
  • Update cash forecast sheet and review weekly with accounts
  • On site visits where appropriate to assess value of work done and highlight any recoverable variations to the original contact sum.
  • Preparation of financial report on a project by project basis and preparing consolidated monthly commercial report for the business.
  • Report on any specific projects which have the potential for significant shortfalls on tender margins.
  • Evaluation of weekly salaries for site operatives. Capture measures and variations.
  • Ensure that the operations staff are kept fully aware of commercial targets and that the appropriate procedures are followed to allow full recovery of variations

In return you can expect a salary of £55k to £60k and for the right candidate, our client would be willing to offer a car allowance too.
