The Company

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise the Design and Engineering departments; raise the technical capability of individuals and teams alike through a culture of learning & development, staff appraisals and best practice implementation.
  • Support the technical aspects of new business development and oversee research & development programmes to meet customer requirements.
  • Production of monthly status reports which detail product development updates, business KPI’s and project costings.
  • Develop the business capability offerings by expanding and creating strategic product groups in line with business objectives.
  • Design Authority for all of the company’s products to ensure they are safe, reliable and fit for purpose; ensure that operational/ manufacturing practises meet with the regulatory requirements of ER2014, ISO18001.
  • Manage and implement the Design Office processes and design best-practice procedures; implementing change as and when required to enhance performance, compliance, reliability and best in practice NPI techniques
  • Ensure that all work carried out complies with company policies and procedures, as well as health and safety requirements as laid down by external bodies.
  • Oversee the production of all Design Office output and procurement; plan and prepare presentations as required.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships across the business.
  • Undertake continuous improvement activities; promote a departmental culture that embraces CI, learning and personal development.
  • Develop strategic action plans for delivering growth; manage development activities and commercial assessments in line with budgets and the strategic plan.
  • Play the leading role in further developing innovative product capability, including the re-design of existing products; oversee any IP controls such as patents etc.
  • Attend workshops, trade shows, and industry seminars as required.
  • Achieve operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to strategic plans, contract and tender reviews.
  • Prepare and complete action plans and internal audits as required.
  • Provide technical support to all departments within the business; liaise and communicate effectively with customers, strategic partners and suppliers.
  • Coordinate and manage the site security, its operating practises and ensure security of the company’s assets meets with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure the company’s products comply with and have the correct CAD (Competent Authority Document) certification to allow legal methods of shipment and that accurate records are maintained.
  • Product proofing: - ensure correct proofing loads are determined for the manufacture of munitions during development and production builds; ensure accurate records are maintained of all proofing results.
  • Attend workshops, trade shows, and industry seminars as required.

The Candidate

  • Ideally qualified to BSc or MSc level in Mechanical or Explosive/Energetic material science/engineering.
  • A background in the defence/munitions sector, including a general knowledge of ammunition or pyrotechnics would be of particular interest.
  • Familiarity with military Design and Test standards; experience of rapid, prototyping, small batch manufacture, customer demonstrations, build qualification and the design of tooling.
  • Proven experience of leading R&D activity: - used to creating and operating with world class design and manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience of design, product development, qualification, engineering and project management within an ISO 9001, ISO 14001 environment and have the ability to apply this knowledge within a highly responsive SME business.
  • Strong strategic skills with the ability to influence direction and set clear goals in the delivery of innovative products in line with business strategies.
  • Oversee the creation of and manage all product technical literature, including product design specifications, qualification test plans, technical reports and NPI requirements.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills - able to challenge/ coach and mentor an established team whilst implementing change in order to maximise efficiencies.
  • Combine the technical and commercial mind-set required to create innovative products with the foresight to see wider commercial opportunities.
  • Have the ability to build strong cross functional, inter-departmental relationships.
  • Display a "common sense" approach to problem solving.
  • Highly IT literate with computer applications/design software for engineering drawings and principles, in particular use of MS Excel and Solidworks.
  • Confident in front of customers: - provide appropriate guidance and support to satisfy current requirements and align the business for future orders.
  • A track record of influencing CI, together with an understanding of manufacturing processes, methods, problem solving tools and manufacturing techniques.
  • Key personal skills include: - initiative, flexibility, attention to detail, problem solving, effective time management and the ability to work under pressure.
  • A strong communicator, customer focused, organised and methodical with good judgement, decision making, multi-tasking and influencing skills.
