Role Context

Working alongside the Head of PR and a PR agency, the Press Officer will use their creativity, their understanding of the UK media landscape, their strong news sense and excellent writing skills to secure positive coverage for our national and regional media (TV, radio, print and online) and target B2B media. The first port of call for all media enquiries, they will be expected to respond to all journalist requests in a timely and professional manner. A member of a high performing and dynamic Marketing and Communications Department, the Press Officer will be a strong team player with a 'can do’ attitude. Responsible for the day to day running of the Press Office, they will distribute media coverage, provide support and advice to colleagues across the organisation and partners across the country. With an understanding of other communication channels, he or she will work with colleagues in social media and marketing to ensure all proactive work is fully integrated. Equipped with management experience, the Press Officer will be responsible for managing a Press Executive.

Role Description

The Press Officer will play a key role within an integrated in-house marketing and communications team structure:

  • Respond to media enquiries from national, regional, trade and specialist media
  • Draft statements, press releases, blogs, letters for publication, opinion pieces and weekly internal newsletter
  • Develop, manage and deliver a strategy to secure positive coverage in regional media (TV, radio, print and online) and target B2B media
  • To research, develop and maintain a target national and trade press list
  • To collate and distribute relevant media coverage through weekly internal newsletter
  • To provide support and advice to colleagues across business and the wider company network
  • To report to and support the Head of PR
  • To evaluate campaigns’ ROI, targeting and reach, extracting key learnings for future campaigns
  • To contribute positively in internal meetings and creative planning sessions
  • To protect the reputation of the company

Person Specification


  • Experience of managing and supporting a member of staff in a communication role
  • Minimum 3-5 years PR experience either in-house or agency
  • Excellent understanding of the UK media landscape
  • Proven track record of proactively securing coverage in consumer and trade media outlets
  • Experience of developing a successful PR campaign from planning, identifying target media and messaging, to drafting press release and pitching to journalist
  • Experience of working in an integrated communication team
  • Experience of crisis communications and reputation management and dealing with sensitive stories
  • Experience of providing advice and support to a range of internal stakeholders
  • Voluntary sector and youth experience is valued
