BMR Solutions are currently recruiting for a Development Engineer to work for our client who are an engineering / manufacturing company located in Clevedon, North Somerset.

SALARY: £28,000 - £32,000

Purpose of the Job:

The role of Development Engineer exists to support the development of new products. Its purpose is to design and develop modules / sub-assemblies of new products in accordance with company Product Commercialisation Process (PCP) procedures ensuring that the required reliability, quality and cost requirements of the Master Specification are achieved. A key element of the role is to meet the Master Specification targets and ensure conformance to the relevant international, national and industry safety standards.

The role of Development Engineer operates within the NPI team and reports to the Project Manager. There is a matrix report to the Engineering Manager via a Lead Engineer for Technical Authority and guidance on the engineering processes.

Projects operate within the Clevedon product company and the Development Engineer role lies within the Engineering Resources which are allocated to a specific project according to the approved product development.

Principal Accountabilities:

·To support the interpretation of Master specification
·To support delivery of design to Master specification targets
·To work within company Product Commercialisation Process (PCP)
·To verify that the designs meet the Master Specification and conform to the relevant design standards by calculation and / or testing as appropriate
·Accountable for the design and development of sub-assemblies of a product ensuring the specified quality and cost are achieved to the agreed project time scale
·Accountable for the detailed documentation of the design (models, drawings, design data, BOM, test data) ensuring all relevant information is recorded in a timely manner in accordance with TCF requirements
·To take technical direction from Senior and Lead Engineer and to report progress to the Project Manager
·To keep abreast of relevant engineering developments and to lead own development in the role – seek support as appropriate from engineering leads and line manager
·To participate in HAZOP and DFMEA studies
·To carry out / participate in and record risk assessments as required in the execution of a project
·To support the introduction of new products onto the factory flow line and where necessary on customers’ sites
·To ensure engineering changes are concluded in accordance with the planned schedule

Qualifications and Experience:

The Development Engineer has the following qualifications and experience:

·A good mechanically biased engineering degree (or other relevant engineering qualification with a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience).
·Experience in NPI - Demonstrable participation in product introductions would be advantageous.
·Knowledge of design for manufacture and design for assembly.
·Some experience in the use of a range of engineering materials and with a number of manufacturing methods/techniques.
·Knowledge of BS EN 8888.
·Knowledge of CE marking and EN standards (Machinery and Low Voltage directives desirable).
·Experience of designing to SEMI standards is desirable.
·Participation in HAZOP, DFMEA studies and risk analysis techniques.
·Experience in the testing of designs.


The Development Engineer is able to demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:

·3D and 2D CAD skills (CATIA, Visio, AutoCAD and/or other drafting tools).
·Skilled in the use of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software e.g. SmarTeam, MAPICS.
·An understanding of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and system schematics.
·Ability to perform engineering calculations and undertake simple FEAs in support of the design.
·Design Engineering – Ability to design and develop piece parts and less complex sub-assemblies of a product.
·Data Analysis – Ability to analyse experimental data, summarise and document conclusions in report format.
·Design Reviews – Ability to lead design reviews for the specific sub-assembly under design (specification, concept, model and critical) and participate in other design reviews where required.
·Sample Approval – Ability to carry out sample approval of new parts and assemblies.
·Interpersonal Skills - Building partnerships with team members and other functions within the business.
·Problem Solving Skills – Ability to solve problems with practical solutions – use of established problem solving techniques, e.g., 8D, Ishikawa etc.
