CMM Programmer

£30,000 - £35000 P/A depending on experience

Role of Job

  • Able to perform highly diversified operations to perform 100 % inspections on a variety of parts, especially those of extreme size and complexity, using a co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) and use any of the standard or special inspection equipment available in the department to perform the required inspection work.Be creative and come up with set-ups on CMM to be able to check what’s needed with one set-up, if possible.

  • SHADOW Graph and all generally used engineering inspection tools
  • Write complete computer controlled machine programs with set up instructions and pictures, using PC DMIS and PowerPoint presentation preferably for DEA CMM machines is also required

  • Test programs and instructions to prove there are no errors for cmm operator use. Includes transferring programs to other cmm and testing for errors and making sure everything works correctly.

  • Perform all necessary mathematical calculations.Use handbooks, charts, tables, or formulas as required.

  • Provide data reports and visual reports, (hyper-reports), for all programs that require such information for Engineers or customers.

  • Provide tag data reports and visual reports for the Quality department to report to the customer to help their disposition of discrepant castings.

  • Perform Scripting at the end of some programs that require 100% checks on parts. Enable scripting to be copied to an Excel file and use calculations in Excel to extract all the data in to an AS9102A form or customer form, so all information is reported correctly just by copying and pasting.

  • Perform highly diversified duties to plan and perform all required operations to dimensionally inspect a wide variety of complex inspection fixtures for calibrations. Must be able to engineer all of the data and make a decision on how to fix or adjust the fixture if it falls out of the tolerance limits.

  • Have a very good understanding of bench layouts and equipment needed to perform these set-ups:Setting parts up so all tooling points are at nominals and knowledge of using rotabs and diving boards to establish this. Help answer questions from other layout inspectors to solve any problems that they may have with their bench set-ups.

  • Work with engineering to help solve problem parts in straightening or information that would help with a die change to make a better conforming casting.

  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on cmm machine, tools, gauges and computer equipment.


  • Knowledge of advanced PC DMIS software.

  • Knowledge of advanced Excel software.

  • Use of PowerPoint presentation.

  • Use advanced shop mathematics, charts, tables and handbook formulas.

  • Apply broad knowledge of a recognised trade, craft or technical field.

  • Work from complex drawings, specifications, charts and tables.

  • Use various types of precision measuring instruments.

  • Equivalent to complete accredited 4-year apprenticeship
