About the Role

The Executive Business Manager (EBM) is a critically important role, enabling the DCC Managing Director (MD) and his direct reports to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders and fulfil their commitments. This is not an administrative role; it is strategic and facilitative one that requires a combination of focus and flexibility, as well as a willingness to play an active, behind the scenes role.

The role is being offered on a permanent basis and will be based in DCC's London office.

About Capita | Business Unit

Capita was awarded the Data Communications Company Licence in October 2013 as part of the UK government's smart metering programme. This was set up to enable the roll out of over 53m smart meters across the UK by 2020.

The programme aims to pass a number of benefits onto consumers, allowing them to;

  • Manage and control their energy use to save money and reduce carbon emissions
  • Provide accurate meter readings and real-time information
  • Help them make informed purchasing decisions and reducing the barriers to switching

Role Detail

  • Management of DCC Executive and DCC Board governance; this responsibility involves working with the MD and Exec Team to plan the forward agenda, co-ordinating the preparation and production of papers, quality assurance and ensuring their timely dissemination to participants..
  • Preparation for, and facilitation of, "critical path" MD meetings with the Exec Team, Board, customers, government and Capita. While members of any one of these groups may initiate these meetings through the MD's Executive Assistant, the EDM is responsible for ensuring that the meeting objectives are realistic, that preparation is appropriate, and that the MD is well-prepared.
  • Co-ordination/orchestration of projects and commitments directly involving the MD and his direct reports. This responsibility primarily focuses on ensuring that outcomes and expectations, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined. Where there is misalignment the EBM will ensure that work plans are co-ordinated and coherent.
  • Development of draft communication on behalf of the MD and/or research in support of these. This will include presentations and papers for engagements with industry, government and suppliers as well as specific pieces of analysis on topics central to the MD's agenda
  • Proactive identification of issues that could impact the successful execution of the MD's commitments; this responsibility involves elevating those issues about which the MD should be aware and framing/positioning ideas to resolve the problem/mitigate the risk.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience within a strategic and facilitative role. Ideally within a corporate environment.
  • Experience of the energy and telecommunication sectors whilst advantageous is not essential.
  • Highly-developed communications skills (written/verbal) and interpersonal savvy
  • Results/action-orientation; project management skills
  • Personal resilience and the ability to manage and prioritise multiple competing requirements
  • Outstanding emotional intelligence
  • Confidence, tact and diplomacy in communicating requirements and constructively challenging senior executives
  • Strong strategic/financial analysis skills; a keen eye for detail.
