Operations Manager

Job Purpose: To lead, direct and manage all aspects of the manufacturing, materials management and sales support activities in the organisation to deliver excellent service and quality to meet customer needs whilst managing costs to meet product margin targets and overheads cost management.

Principal Responsibilities:

1. Provide strong, professional leadership and direction to the manufacturing, materials management and sales support activities ensuring that people are well trained and motivated and that resources are deployed effectively to meet the customer and business need. This involves direct responsibility for 4 people in Sales support activities and indirectly for 36 people through the Production Manager.

2. To manage the annual cost budget for the manufacturing, materials management and sales support activities within agreed levels. This role has a substantial cost responsibility being accountable for the control of stock (value £1.5m) and the effective purchase of materials which account for 70% of the cost base of the Company.

3. To develop and manage an effective, reliable materials management process within the supply chain function. This will link closely to the strategic procurement activities for off shore suppliers. This is a frontline responsibility for cost management with strategic support from the Operations Director.

4. Demonstrate a commitment to world class excellence by leading and developing continuous improvement initiatives which will enhance throughput and deliver the very highest in product quality and service levels.

5. To ensure that company operations comply with the required Health, Safety and Environmental regulations and standards and support initiatives to develop HSE best practice.

1. Set, agree and review objectives for direct report of Production Manager and indirectly for the each supervisor for manufacturing standard and special products, stores, despatch, materials management and administrative sales support in line with performance management process, with a hands on approach to managing each of these areas.

2. To establish and manage an effective skills development program to deliver flexible working practices and the highest quality standards within all operations and sales support processes. Program to reinforce correct and fair disciplines for behaviours and work organisation practices.

3. To take full ownership of creating and driving the production plan to meet all customer deliveries, with the most efficient plan for labour utilisation and weekly financial targets. The plan should recognise available capacity balanced with the need to flex schedules to meet immediate demands from key customers.

5. Develop and implement a series of continuous improvement projects in the pursuit of the business vision and objectives. Specific attention to improving efficiencies and increasing schedule flexibility without compromise to quality levels.

7. Within HSE maintain company health and safety policy, carrying out regular safety audits, ensure maintain regular risk assessments and execution of recommended actions. Manage and enact Fire safety and evacuation procedures including regular drills testing of extinguishers and alarms.

8. Manage the site facilities to ensure fully maintained, safe, efficient and represent the market leading brand image of the company.

9. Implement daily cycle counts and annual inventory count to maintain integrity and accuracy of inventory, by count, location and financial value.

10. Direct purchasing to ensure that stock levels maintained to meet customer needs, whilst maximising inventory turns.

Knowledge & Experience:

Degree or equivalent in business, manufacturing 0rm engineering related subject.
