Gear4music is looking for a Senior PHP Developer in Manchester. We’re looking to further grow our team of PHP developers with likeminded individuals who want to bring innovative solutions to the forefront.

Job Overview

Gear4music are the largest online retailer of musical instruments and equipment in the UK. We are the fastest growing in Europe.

We have a well-established technical team of over 40 engineers and colleagues based in Manchester. We employ another 350 people across our head office in York and our 3 European distribution centres.


We're looking for smart people who can bring fresh ideas and innovation in all areas including, system architecture, software engineering, process analysis and security.

The development team you would be joining is responsible for developing and maintaining our bespoke E-commerce and ERP platform.

Developer Responsibilities

Write high quality, effective code, following company standards

Understand & help solve complex problems and produce innovative solutions

Work collaboratively with other members of the development team and wider business

Take advantage of existing technologies, systems, frameworks, processes, libraries & packages, experience & staff wherever possible

Build future-proof solutions wherever possible - i.e. plan for scale and potential variation

Review and provide code reviews, feedback on PRs from other team members

Employ best practice and standards wherever possible

Be aligned with the commercial goals of the wider business and understand the value proposition for each project

Know what “a good job” looks like and ensure that it is delivered

Commercial Experience

3 years+ in commercial development, most likely on e-commerce or high volume transactional systems.


A solid understanding of OO PHP and associated practices

Strong MySQL knowledge, working with large & complex schemas

Interface development with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery

Experience with UNIX/Linux environments

Awareness of Cloud Computing principles

Understanding of virtualisation & containerisation

Experience of Composer & Packagist

Version control - Git

Understanding of software patterns

Experience with unit testing


An interest in application performance (from micro-optimisations in PHP code, MySQL schemas & queries through to progressive web)

Experience with UNIX/Linux environments

Experience building highly scalable and complex distributed systems

Experience with Cloud Computing (ideally Google Cloud)

Experience with Kubernetes

Experience with any of the following is a plus: Elasticsearch, GitHub, Continuous Integration, Travis, Codeception, PHPUnit, Docker, GCP, App Engine, Datastore, xhprof, npm, gulp, Solr, Vagrant, Capistrano, Puppet.

SASS, JavaScript frameworks - React, Angular, Bootstrap, ExtJS
