Our client; an engineering company based in Barton-under-Needwood is looking for a HS&E Advisor for a 6 month contract starting as soon as possible.

The main purpose of this role will be lead the development and implementation of Health & Safety, policies and procedures at our Burton Upon Trent site to ensure the safety of staff, visitors and contractors, in line with current and future Health, Safety, Environmental legislation including BS EN Safety Management Systems. You will provide support to HSE Manager in the continued development and maintenance of ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001.

You will assist to develop, implement and maintain management systems that will actively deliver a safe working environment, customer satisfaction and ensure statutory compliance. Promote a culture of excellence and continual improvement. Monitor and measure the system in order to identify areas of improvement.

Key duties are:
Health & Safety
● Act as the sites “competent person” in respect of management of health and safety at work regulations.
● Monitor and review Health and Safety policy and practice, recommending and implementing improvements, maintaining up to date knowledge of current legislation.
● Report to the HSE Manager on all Health and Safety compliance.
● Work with departmental supervisors and managers, and other key staff to establish and maintain key Health, Safety and Environmental improvements within their areas of responsibility.
● Promote good HSE practices by training and educating people and supporting managers and other key staff.
● Embed a culture of pro-active risk management and health and safety.
● Manage all health and safety activities on the site.
● Assist to devise, develop and monitor effective Risk Assessment management strategies and organise and lead risk assessment teams.
● Provide training for staff in relation to Health and Safety and Environmental management.
● Carry out or arrange workplace safety audits and ensure that any remedial recommendations.
● Monitor H&S key performance indicators, providing management with statistical analysis and taking remedial action where necessary.
● Arrange for all accidents, incidents and near-misses to be investigated, collate findings and approve course of action for prevention of recurrence.
● Maintain a register of First Aiders and ensure the adequate provision of first-aid facilities.
● Manage processes to ensure that contractors, suppliers, consultants and other visitors comply with relevant legislation and safety policies.
● Manage and maintain the COSHH database, ensuring COSHH statements are available on all hazardous materials and that effective risk assessments are in place to manage the handling and use of such substances.
● Ensure the implementation of the Fire and Evacuation Procedure and monitor its effectiveness by undertaking fire evacuation drills on site at least once per year.
● Provide Health, Safety and Environmental support to key projects.

Environmental
● Ensure legal compliance and reduce risk of non-compliance for example with The Environmental Protection Act 1990 Regulations, including waste disposal, emissions, Trade Effluent and other legal requirements.
● Identify opportunities for continuous environmental improvement and implement programmes to deliver these.
● Manage and control recycling and waste management procedures.
● Assist to maintain ISO14001 standard.
● Assist to identify legal requirements associated with the environment which are applicable.
● Communicate environmental information to internal and external stakeholders
● Assist to report to the management team on the performance of the environmental management system for review, including recommendations for improvement

Person Specification:
● NEBOSH Qualification
● Experience of KPI collation
● Proven experience of delivering H&S training
● Experience of working with HS&E management systems.
● Commercially/legally aware.
● Good understanding of Health and Safety legislation.
● Understanding of ISO14001:2004
● Sound IT skills (particularly Office package)
● Discrete and diplomatic manner, demonstrating impartiality of judgement
● Customer focused
● Current driving licence.
● Able to attend some meetings out of normal office hours
