Mechanical Design Engineer- Defence Electronics
Location: Gloucester

Permanent Position

I am supporting a hi-technology business based in Gloucester who specialise in the design, development and manufacture of advanced electronic products and solutions for use in harsh environments, with a focus on supplying into the Defence sector.

In order to support the continued growth of the organisation they are looking to appoint a mechanical design engineer to the team. The position will see you working as part of a multidiscipline design team and see you involved in every stage of the development process seeing projects through from concept to manufacturing support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production of detailed electro- mechanical design solutions
  • Co-ordinate and plan mechanical design activities alongside the electronics, software, compliance, integration and test teams
  • Packaging of complex electronic assemblies
  • Create and maintain product drawings and product design documentation
  • Support production engineering to produce product build documentation by compiling annotated pictorial assembly steps
  • Support prototype build programs
  • Assist with validation and testing of products
  • Liaise with production department to achieve continuous product improvement
  • Support document release and engineering change request procedures
  • Ensure work is in accordance with company, customer and BS standards


Key skills and Background Required:

  • A high-profile mechanical design engineer with at least 2 years' experience and a good track record in development of electro- mechanical products
  • Experience working on the development of products from concept to manufacture
  • Proficient user of 3D & 2D CAD, ideally Solidworks & AutoCAD for the creation of detailed designs and manufacturing drawings
  • Understanding of geometrical & dimensional tolerances
  • Experience designing electro-mechanical enclosures
  • Experience packaging complex electronic components
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and associated cost drivers: sheet metal and machined components
  • Knowledge EMC compliance and testing
  • Electrical/ electronics engineering understanding: circuit understanding of communications, computer and IT equipment
  • Experience of Electronic circuit, PCB design and cable drawings is desirable
  • Knowledge of ingress protection, thermal management, heat transfer & vibration protection is advantageous
  • Experience working within a highly regulated sector with experience taking products through certification requirements, understanding of UK/ US Military standards is highly desirable
  • Experience working within the defence or aerospace sectors is highly desirable
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaborate with a multi-discipline team
  • A Degree, HND, HNC or equivalent in a relevant Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electronics & Electrical

Due to the nature of the work all candidates need to be able to obtain SC clearance
