This is an ideal position within a large membership organisation for someone qualified and/or experienced in journalism or public relations. The purpose of the role is to act as a focal point for media enquiries, developing strategic and tactical communications activity through the robust use of communications channels, both internally and externally.
Principal accountabilities:
* As the first point of contact for media enquiries, promptly co-ordinating responses in line with the communications strategy, escalating to the Deputy Head of PR & Media as appropriate
* Building and maintaining a strong network of spokespeople, ensuring they are trained and briefed to appropriately speak on behalf of the organisation
* Working innovatively to create strategies, plans and engaging communications products that support the organisation’s priorities and increase its profile and awareness
* Researching and monitoring mental health coverage across communications channels
* Collating, analysing and disseminating relevant communications coverage internally
* Developing and maintaining a network of influencers to enhance communication impact
* Assisting with channel management including the website and social media
* Creating multimedia communications products for a range of channels, and creatively developing such channels
Skills/experience:
* Degree or equivalent professional qualification in journalism/public relations
* Minimum of two years of experience working in a communications role
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to research, analyse and summarise information and complex issues into a clear, concise, accurate and accessible form
* Excellent planning and organisational skills, ability to prioritise own work and flexibility and adaptability to tight deadlines and demands
* Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
* Extensive experience of responding to media enquiries, and writing/issuing press releases and statements
* Experience of creating video and audio content
* Awareness of the role of media activity in a membership organisation
* Good understanding of media distribution, analytics tools and blogging platforms
The Communications Officer will be required to take part in an out-of-hours on-call rota, which may involve evening and/or weekend working: an allowance will be paid for on-call duties.
