About the Role

Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey is the largest charity in Surrey working with people who are vision impaired, Deaf, Hard of Hearing or who have combined sight and hearing loss. We have provided support to the blind and partially sighted community since 1922. We started to deliver services to people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in February 2016 after securing a contract with Surrey County Council. Our mission is to help anyone whose eyesight or hearing has become a cause for concern to help them lead full and independent lives. We are a countywide charity based in Fetcham, near Leatherhead.

In order to meet the growing demands on the Specialist One to One Service, especially in the provision of support for BSL users, we are seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Communicator Guide to work across Surrey. You will be required to work in a flexible manner to enable maximum uptake of new client contact hours.

The post is to provide 36 hours CG / VISW hours per week although job share may be considered. Sessional opportunities may also be available. Sign language skills, minimum level 2 is essential. These hours need to be flexible to fit the personalised needs of the people with Combined Sight and Hearing Loss or those with a sight loss who wish to use the service. This means some evening and weekend work will be required.

The permanent communicator guide/visual impairment support worker will:

  • be available to work as CG/VISW at short notice
  • start up services
  • provide cover in an area where we are short of CG’s/VISW’s for an introductory period
  • provide emergency cover if the usual CG/VISW is unable to provide a service.
  • offer CG/VISW ‘taster’ sessions so that a person can experience the service and decide if they wish to contract it.
  • complete risk assessments for people wishing to use the service
  • complete introductions of communicator guides/visual impairment support workers to people using the service.
  • provide a variety of communication support, this may include adapted BSL, Deafblind Manual and clear speech.
  • work throughout the administrative County of Surrey

We have an increased demand for specialist workers with sign language skills. Although the majority of people we work with are older people who use clear speech, we have experienced a significant increase in requests to provide services to people who are younger and people who use sign language as their first language.

The post holder will require a Disclosure and Barring Service check which we can arrange.

Interviews will be held the week of 5th June 2017
