Responsibilities:

The Motor control specialist is responsible for:

- Designing motor control algorithms.
- Working with sales, marketing and engineering to define product specifications
- Research in to new / novel motor control algorithms.
- Coding, validating and debugging where changes to software are required.
- Documentation of coding and validation.
- Providing support to the development department for all aspects of motor control.
- Providing support to the applications department for all aspects of motor control.
- Ensuring that Motor Control development follows the company processes and quality procedures.
- Supervision and guidance of junior engineers and technicians.

Reporting: The reporting structure is as follows:

- The Motor Control Specialist reports to the Chief Control Specialist.
- Issues which cannot be resolved with the immediate manager go to the Head of Research.
- Junior Engineers and Engineering technicians may at times report to the post holder.

Performance:

- Your performance will be measured by a combination of quantitative, qualitative and subjective means. You will be assessed by your peer group and senior management. Your performance will be measured by:-
- Meeting project timescales
- Meeting product specifications
- Meeting product cost targets
- Adherence to company procedures
- Quality of work

Qualifications:

- Degree level or higher in Electrical / Electronic Engineering, with some modules covering machines and drives.

Various motor technologies including some or all of the following:

- Permanent Magnet Motors (interior and surface)
- Induction Motors
- Switched reluctance Motors
- DC motors

3-phase Motor inverters including some or all of the following:

- PWM (pulse width modulation)
- Position encoders
- Electric Vehicles / Battery powered systems

Control methods including some or all of the following:

- Vector control
- Scalar control
- PI control loops
- Sensorless control
- Field weakening

Software / Simulation tools, some experience of the following is preferable:

- Embedded real time coding
- Coding in C
- Matlab / Simulink

Personal attributes:

- Must be able to think outside the box
- Must be a team player and also able to work alone with minimum guidance
- Structured individual with good problem solving and analytical skills
- Able to deliver a project on time
