RESEARCH ENGINEER/SENIOR RESEARCH - FUSION WELDING

The component Technology group is a vibrant and rapidly growing area of research, which has the potential to revolutionise the way that parts are designed and manufactured, across a wide range of industrial sectors. Component Technology encompasses three themes, namely, Net Shape & Additive manufacturing (NS&AM), High Integrity Fabrication (HIF) and Non-Conventional Machining (NCM).
Within the HIF theme significant investment has been made in a variety of state-of-the-art welding/joining equipment including:
2-kW laser processing cell.
125T and 300T Rotary Friction Welders (RFW)
130T Liner Friction Welding (LFW).
Automated TIG welding capability.
Automated cladding capability including PTA and laser.
We have several roles at various levels available.
The purpose of this role is to help facilitate the advancement of the MTC research programme in the area of fusion welding to meet the needs of clients and stakeholders. The role will involve industrial and academic research collaborations of the fusion welding team (arcs and lasers) to develop the technologies through the manufacturing Capability Readiness Levels (MCRL's) 4-6 for a range of customers in the HVM sector. Successful candidates will also have responsibility for developing the research portfolio within the team, through collaboration with the Business Development Manager, Industrial Partnership Manager and Group Technology Manager (depending on the level of the role taken)
Duties and responsibilities
Fusion welding research with the team to deliver ground-breaking projects.
Ensure that research work is undertaken to meet or exceed the customers' quality expectations and is managed within the budgets and timescales allocated to each project.
Develop new market opportunities for the business, including delivery of an order pipeline that grows the fusion welding activity within the MTC.
Be involved /lead the preparation of funding proposals (client, EU, UK Government) within fusion welding.
More senior roles will require you to work with the Group Technology Manager and Chief Engineer to:
Ensure optimised use of resources.
Continually evolve the fusion welding technology roadmap.
Optimise MTCs investment in the new technology platforms.
Pro-actively represent and promote the MTC at national and international forums and in publications associated with fusion welding:
Po-actively engage with academia, particularly the MTC Founder Members, to develop mutually beneficial relations, win collaborative research projects and keep up to date with low TRL (1-4) technology that is being developed.
Lead, develop and provide advice and trouble-shooting support to staff within the thematic group as well as developing a staff team with the required skills, motivation and reputation.
Co-ordinating the development of a forward technology.
Pro-actively working with other Technology areas and problem domains to develop research ideas and market offerings from across MTC's full scope of capability.
Fostering and encouragement of collaboration with co-workers across the research partners and industry members and lead in the establishment of new relationships.
Identification and pursuance of new opportunities for exploitation of research.
Candidates must have an excellent educational profile up to and including degree educated in mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace engineering or materials science, ideally with a Masters or PhD in a relevant area of study.
Your experience should cover key aspects of one or more fusion welding technologies, including recent experience of successfully managing research teams and managing multi partner projects involving fusion welding techniques for the higher level roles. Candidates should be able to write proposals, have project management and commercial skills as well as experience of proposing, costing and winning R & D project works.
Technical skills and Knowledge required includes:
Knowledge of the use of process equipment and instrumentation.
Data analysis skills including the use of appropriate data handling software.
Knowledge of relevant health & safety and environmental issues.
