The Role

Working in a large health and safety team, in one of the largest steel manufacturer’s in the UK, this role will support the melt shop operational teams with high-quality health and safety expertise. This job will appeal to health and safety specialists who demand challenge in their work life, and having the opportunity to showcase their multi-disciplinary skills, knowledge and experience in a dynamic, changing and varied environment.

Our melt shop was built in 2006 and uses some of the most modern steel-making processes in the world. The melt shop environment is inherently hazardous- but you already knew that. A normal day for us includes using hazardous substances, multiple heavy lifting operations and working in close proximity to molten metal that reaches temperatures well in excess of 1500oC. As the expert in health and safety for the melt shop, you’ll coach the first line and operational management teams on how they can change attitudes and habits amongst the workforce, and you’ll also recommend technical improvements that reduces the risk to our workers the exposure to working conditions. If you like being behind a desk, this is not the job for you. The health and safety team believes in doing as much of our work on the shop floor as possible- whether that’s a near miss investigation, inspection, audit or safety conversation, at least half of our day is spent where our operations happen. If this approach excites you, and you truly believe you can make the plant a better and safer place to work, this might be the job for you.

About You

You need to be a confident communicator, who can adapt their approach to negotiate desirable outcomes. You’ll like rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty. You will have the freedom to take independent action, use your initiative and with a sense of urgency, make decisions and take responsibility for them. The environment and challenges are constantly changing so you’ll need to be someone who can come up with practical solutions. There is a great deal of pressure, and people and problems must be handled with confidence and determination. We need a direct communicator, someone who isn’t afraid to voice their opinions and ideas.

If you’ve read this advert you’ve probably come to realise that you need some excellent experience in Health & Safety, with a background in Heavy Industry, whether that is Oil & Gas, Chemical, Steel or any other industry which has the mix of complicated processes and involves many people. You’ll have the qualifications to back this up with a minimum of NEBOSH Level 6.

What You Get

We're a community who want to support our colleagues. You may be someone who already has the skills and experience needed to do the role but we're sure we can teach you something new. You'll have real voice in your team where your ideas and your opinion will be an influencing force in the department. Most of all, you’ll be part of an incredibly close-knit team who are constantly striving to be better.
