Summary:

Come and be part of an innovative and influential University department delivering excellent IT and business services to a leading Russell Group institution. With a reputation for engaging staff and students in partnership to deliver services, for three years running UK students have voted us best for IT support. We are committed to delivering and supporting excellent customer focussed services and to do this we need to recruit the best staff, invested in higher education and dedicated to supporting sector leading learning, teaching and research – and that’s why we need you…

This post is in the Database Group, part of the Infrastructure Team within the Technical Services section of CiCS. You will support the team in developing, maintaining, administering and monitoring a range of systems.

You will be expected to work in both development and operational roles carrying out a range of duties ranging from the day-to-day response to enquiries through to planning upgrade, maintenance & project work months in advance.

We are looking for a Database and Application Systems Administrator who, in conjunction with colleagues, will develop, configure, maintain and troubleshoot services underpinned by a database (usually Oracle). You will support the corporate databases running on Oracle, optimising performance from the application through to the database; you will support developers. You will provide support to third party applications which service major business needs for example Reporting/BI/MI (Cognos), Timetabling (CMIS), Management of Research Publications (Symplectic). You will assist in the routine service administration for example Oracle Patching. You will become a focal point for advice on database technologies to colleagues. You will be expected to analyse emerging technologies & review their applicability for our environment.

You will be self-motivated and capable of thorough and methodical work - sometimes under pressure, using initiative, assessing technologies and products, and translating them, where appropriate, into working solutions for business problems. You should also have excellent communications skills, both written and verbal and have a demonstrable ability in network administration and security.

You will report to the Database Group Leader and will work closely with other colleagues within the group. You will also work with other colleagues, both within and outside the Infrastructure team, as and when appropriate. Some out-of-hours working may be necessary in order to avoid disruption to critical services. A call-out allowance scheme is in operation.
