Mid Calder Primary is a non-denominational primary school serving Mid Calder village and the surrounding rural community. The school is part of the West Calder cluster and works very closely with its cluster schools to continually seek to improve and develop the learning experiences of all pupils.

At present, the school roll is 250 pupils in addition to a nursery provision for 30 children in the morning and 30 children in the afternoon.

The staff consists of the Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher and one Principal teacher, 13 class teachers, a part-time Support for Learning teacher and two Nursery Nurses. The school has a visiting specialist for brass instruction one day per week for pupils from primary 5 to primary 7. There are five pupil support workers who support learners across the school.

Staff demonstrate strong collegiality, distributed leadership and teamwork and this maintains the positive ethos for learning and teaching in the school.

Mid Calder Primary has a strong partnership with parent/carers, the local community and outside agencies. The school is committed to developing and maintaining strong multi-agency working relationships to support the learning needs of all pupils and their families.

The key duties of this post are:
  • Communication - Front line reception contact for the school
  • Typing/Word-processing for other school staff - correspondence, reports, returns, minutes, timetables etc.
  • Simple reprographics duties - photocopying, collating, stapling.
  • Reception and telephone duties - screening members of staff from outside interruption wherever possible.
  • Collecting/relaying information throughout the school.
  • Assist with collection and recording of monies, checking and recording cash.
  • Advising kitchen staff of daily meals requirements including free meals, staff and visitors.
    Data Management - assisting with the maintenance of all information kept within the school, in accordance with Data Protection Requirements.
  • Security/Health & Safety: Assist with the operation, maintenance and allocation of school security as required.

The skills and experience you must have:
  • A reasonable standard of general education.
    Must be literate, numerate and should be a competent typist/Word Processor Operator.
  • Some previous office experience involving typing and/or record keeping, preferably within a school/college environment.
    Flexible and adaptable and be able to work on own initiative in a complex office environment within guidelines and with support from senior office staff.
  • Must be able mult-task and work under pressure with competing demands.
  • A good basic knowledge of administrative and financial procedures as well as proven competence in operational IT systems.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by West Lothian Council
