I currently have a unique opportunity available to join my client as a Senior Design Engineer on a permanent basis at their site in Gloucester. My client is a leading manufacturer of ruggedized components into the bespoke engineering sector and aspires to be a dominant player in the market for safety critical and harsh environment applications.

The successful candidate will design, develop and implement innovative electro-mechanical design solutions from initial enquiry through to production. Conducting design, development and prototyping of complex systems for specialised secure IT applications, in line with all applicable legislation and company directives. The ideal candidate will be educated to at least HNC level and have around 5 years' experience as a design engineer.

Responsibilities

*To design, develop and implement innovative electro-mechanical design solutions from initial enquiry through to production.

*Conducting design, development and prototyping of complex systems for specialised secure IT applications, in line with all applicable legislation and company directives.

*Support the Production, Test and TEMPEST teams as products progress through all stages of the development and production process.

*Working in a multi-discipline project team to create innovative product design solutions.

*Meet objectives agreed with line manager as far as timescales, cost estimates and technical performance are concerned.

*Mentoring and assistance of other engineers.

*Ensuring that design changes are implemented by the team in a timely manner.

*Support other departments for the procurement and manufacture of products.

*Problem solving of design related issues on existing and new product developments.

*Independently manage personal workload across multiple projects, in line with IPT milestones.

*Create, manage and release design documentation and Bills of Materials in accordance with company, customer and BSI Standards.

*Produce accurate build documentation by compiling annotated pictorial assembly steps.

*Plan, manage and support prototype build programs.

*Conduct validation testing of developed products.

*Liaise with suppliers and customers, negotiate costs and materials, establish lead times and maintain quality standards.

*Actively support and implement Drawing Office Procedures, maintain company Document Release and Engineering Change Request procedures.

*Provide the sales team with technical support during the bid process.

*Work towards personal and developmental SMART Objectives.

*Understand the impact of design decisions on cost, timings and production build.

*Have a general interest in IT equipment and uses in the secure and rugged markets.

*Basic knowledge of UK TEMPEST standards, E.g. SDIP55, SDIP 27 & SDIP 29.

*Basic knowledge of UK & US Military EMC and Environmental Test Standards, E.G. Mil Stan 810, 461, Def Stan 00-35 & Def Stan 59-411.

*Able to work with good attention to detail to produce concise design documentation always aiming for a 'right first time' approach.

*Ability to gain SC clearance.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Experience


*HNC or BEng in Mechanical Engineering desirable.

*Comprehensive experience designing and drafting using SolidWorks and Workgroup PDM.

*Capable of producing technical engineering drawings to comply with BS 8888.

*A good understanding of the theory and practice of Geometrical Tolerancing and Tolerance Stacks calculations to BS 8888.

*Knowledge in sheet metal and CNC fabrication techniques.

*Strong understanding of modern design practices and manufacturing/prototyping processes and their costs drivers.

*Experience in working in a regulated industry, understanding data storage criteria and handling sensitive information up to UK Secret.

*Maintain a continuous assessment of new technologies and procedures which may be appropriate to be incorporated into future products and processes to enable company growth and development.

*Ability to work as part of a team or independently under minimum supervision.

*Full UK Driving license desirable.

*Willingness to travel to customer and supplier sites.
