A MRC-funded Research Associate position is available for 3 years (start date 01/12/16) to study the protective effects of insulin during pancreatitis. Our previous and preliminary studies have shown that insulin directly protects pancreatic acinar cells during pancreatitis. This is due to a metabolic shift towards glycolysis that preserves ATP to fuel the plasma membrane Ca 2+ pumps and prevent cytotoxic Ca 2+ overload and cellular injury. You will investigate the precise signaling, pathways and metabolic phenotype responsible for these protective effects of insulin in pancreatic acinar cells. The project will use a multidisciplinary approach, including proteomics, metabolomics, fluorescence imaging and in vivo models of pancreatitis. Experience in a range of these techniques would be a distinct advantage. There will be opportunities for a research visit to the laboratory of our collaborators at the University of Michigan to learn and oversee in vivo experiments.
