My client a global organisation are looking for a Head of Engineering to own the application and delivery of technology solutions. You will be required to use a broad range of development experience across the whole delivery lifecycle to ensure projects deliver on their promises.

The Head of Engineering will directly manage the development teams working across the Global Digital Technology Group, with an emphasis on the Agile methodology. Since our clients established markets operate across the spectrum of technology maturity, solid experience of waterfall development methods is also key to success, particularly as we engage multiple new territories and markets as part of their strategic international expansion.

The role holder will provide 'pre-project' consultancy and advice to shape solutions, and will be called on to use their skills and knowledge to lead how we shape and resource new projects.

Accountability: What are you here to do?

You will lead the software developers who are building solutions, across web, mobile and product channels, and guide them in their selection and deployment of continuous delivery tooling.

You will manage stakeholders as they engage with the software delivery lifecycle, acting as an escalation interface between projects and the wider business.

You will be responsible for the quality of delivery, and both governance and assurance that deliverables adhere to defined standards and industry best-practise.

You will mediate with external vendors, designers and architects where appropriate to define and maintain fit for purpose solutions.

You will lead the process of assessing suitable solutions/vendors with respect to software development, including PaaS/SaaS platforms and associated tools.

You will engage with business stakeholders and business analysts to ensure ongoing alignment with the business goals as they inevitably evolve.

You will lead the definition and maintenance of models and documentation, ensuring they are fit for purpose, relevant and useful to relevant stakeholders and partners.

Organisation: Where does this role fit in?

The Head of Engineering role reports into the Global Technology Director, within the Global Digital Technology Group.

Skills & Experience: What is needed to do the job?


- 5+ years in digital technology, or hosted website technologies.
- Experience in a software development role (Enterprise wide).
- Experience of working under Agile and waterfall development methodologies.
- Hands-on experience of IaaS/PaaS/SaaS and associated business benefits, particularly to optimise the software development lifecycle.
- Hands-on experience of distributed source control systems
- Solid technical experience with at least one Enterprise software stack, e.g. J2EE, .NET, with an in-depth understanding of architecture and design, system integration, infrastructure and operations.
- Experience of working in a structured project environment, e.g. an Enterprise.
- Experience working across diverse technologies and deployment environments.
- Experience line-managing individuals, whether internal or contract.
- Strong team player with good interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and negotiation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient to plan and manage own work & others, as and when required, to deliver agreed objectives and outputs.
- Ability to pick any issue up, research it or lead its research, and run with it to conclusion.
- Ability to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual project-scope decisions.
- Ability to translate, or lead the translation of, business needs into technical solutions.
- Ability to rapidly comprehend the functions, capabilities and implications of new technologies.


- Experience of a regulated industry, preferably Insurance.
- Exposure to business analysis or business strategic planning.


- SiteCore CMS experience advantageous.

Knowledge: What knowledge is required to do the job?


- Bachelors or higher degree in a computer science or related field.

Regulatory knowledge:

- Working knowledge of a regulated environment is beneficial, e.g. FCA, DPA, PCI, HIPAA, etc.
