Our client has been established for more than half a century and specialised in the procurement and supply of highest quality fresh FMCG produce to customers throughout the UK and Europe. As a result of continued success and a planned programme of ongoing strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and proactive Graduate Commercial Buyer to complement their professional purchasing team.
Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, the successful Graduate Commercial Buyer will be realistically able to demonstrate at least 12 months post academic commercial experience gained within a professional purchasing environment, and will be responsible for implementing the company's buying and selling policies, researching and recommending plans and programmes for the procurement of both produce and services and taking into account supply lead times.
You will also be tasked with providing business insight into the category dynamics under which you will be responsible, understanding and refining seasonal buying requirements as appropriate in order to ensure a consistent supply of produce across 365/6days of the year, with compensation for delay and early starts being an essential best practice buying. You will also work closely with the commercial team to ensure margins, stock sheets and waste control are filled and completed in a timely manner, and will effectively identify "problematic" sourcing issues that will affect the business supply plan in advance of them arising, in order to plan to avoid availability impacts, and will liaise with the supply base with any commercial requirements as instructed by the head of department.
Working within stringent customer and technical specifications and standards, you will implement buying regulations on cash and terms within the current company guidelines and support parallel teams in all aspects of purchasing and disposal of produce as and when required, establishing new sources of buying and countries of origin under the direction of the category manager or as directed and attending regular meetings with suppliers to establish strong relationships and obligations for both parties, while identifying opportunities.
As many suppliers are based overseas, you will often host visitors to the UK as well as undertaking occasional trips outside of the UK, so flexibility on booth hours worked and to travel as required is essential for the position, and you will demonstrate skills and abilities in negotiating and agreeing "best value" buying prices and in managing the buying of a portfolio of products that can change from time to time. Other duties will include ensuring the company's profit objectives are achieved, and that the customer service level of 99% is maintained, and ensuring that goods arrive in a timely manner so that they can processed by the production department in time to meet despatch deadlines. You will strive to increase trading profit while reducing operating costs and both negotiate and control expenditure against budget whilst maintaining stock inventories to service customer demand requirements whilst minimising spoilage losses. Essentially you will possess exceptional communication skills at all levels to ensure good relationships both internally and externally are developed and maintained.
