Nuclear Security Inspector – Cyber Security and Information Assurance

Bootle, Cheltenham, London

As a Nuclear Inspector, you’ll secure a high-hazard industry.

The challenge
A fast-evolving public corporation, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is committed to shaping the future of regulation in the UK nuclear industry. It’s an exciting challenge, and we need dynamic individuals with vision and initiative to join our Nuclear Security Inspector teams.

The role
Our Nuclear Security Inspectors are critical to our work. They check compliance, improve safety standards and reassure the public. The role is varied and offers a range of responsibilities, from enforcing the law to investigating accidents. Some inspectors focus on on-site inspections, while others will assess safety submissions or manage intervention projects. In all cases, communication is vital. You’ll work with numerous stakeholders, providing advice and taking formal action if necessary.

In our Cyber Security and Information Assurance team, you’ll assess security plans, ensuring that cyber risks are being managed effectively. As part of this, you’ll conduct regulatory interventions, help develop policies and liaise with other regulators.

The person
You’ll have a qualification in a relevant subject, such as Information Technology, Cyber Security or Electronic Engineering. This’ll be supported by an impressive range of expertise across technical aspects of cyber defence and people matters related to risk management. Ideally, you’ll hold full membership of an appropriate professional body, and will have completed further training that evidences a good level of technical skills.

Whatever your background, it’s important you have the credibility to inspire trust and confidence. Collaborative and articulate, you’ll be adept at persuading and influencing others to bring about positive change. The key is to provide practical guidance and to apply sound judgement to make risk-informed decisions. Comfortable working in a complex and fast-paced environment, you’ll be both resilient and flexible in the face of tough challenges.

The rewards
We offer competitive salaries, with Inspectors earning £44,885 - £52,963. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a generous Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a very generous holiday entitlement.

About us
ONR is a Public Corporation created to ensure the highest standards of safety and security across all of the UK’s licensed nuclear sites. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases to planned inspections and advising licensees on areas that are difficult to regulate such as safety culture, leadership and vision.
