Our client is a global market leader within the heavy industrial/mineral processing sector and operates a number of plants in the UK.

Due to dynamic growth our client is now seeking a Chemical Engineering graduate to take the lead as Senior Technical Manager at a brand new technical centre. This is an excellent career development and leadership role for an experienced Technical Manager. You will lead a team comprising Quality, Environmental, Technical and Process Optimisation.

As Senior Technical Manager you will lead the technical department driving year on year improvement in the business through innovation and technical capability. In addition, you will ensure a sustainable direction for the business and the maintenance of relevant accreditation (including ISO9001/14001/50001). Critically you will also provide commercial technical support to the sales team, ensuring technical resource is directed appropriately towards internal and external technical support needs.

The Role:

As Senior Technical Manager:

You will be the owner of commercial innovation, forging relationships and technical information flow in order to deliver a structured and prioritised innovation pipeline. This role will identify product application and service offering opportunities and coordinate their delivery, effectively linking cross functionally to maintain clear communication of priorities/progress.

You will development the technical capability of the business, creating and maintaining processes which continually increase relevant technical knowledge in all areas. Allied to this will be the creation, maintenance and development of a pool of technical resource to support the existing business and future business ambitions.

You will engage with external organisations to assist in lobbying for appropriate regulatory and product standard frameworks. This will include interface with other plc businesses and their technical management to identify business opportunities.

• Modify current products to improve performance or reduce costs
• Develop the technical department to meet the demands and growth of the customer base
• Development of new products from customer instruction to plant trials.
• Carry out site trials for a global customer base.
• Test and evaluate the performance of raw materials and additives.
• Provide customer service and liaison to both UK and export accounts.
• Provide regular progress reports to senior executives.
• Manage and develop the skills and competencies of the technical team.
• Writing and preparation of trial reports.
• Dealing with customer requests and investigations of customer technical queries and complaints.
• To keep abreast of scientific and market developments within the industry.
• To be constantly aware of the changes in standards, relevant legislation and test procedures.
• Contribute, communication and function as part of the commercial team.

The Ideal Candidate:

Applicants must be degree educated in Chemical Engineering or very similar disciplines. A post Graduate qualification such as a MSc or PhD would be highly advantageous.

Currently you may be in a similar technical or quality or process optimisation/engineering role. You must have some previous management/leadership experience within a technical environment.

Candidates currently working within the minerals processing, quarrying, steel, bulk chemicals and additives, construction materials, salt, aggregates, stone or cement industry, or other similar heavy engineering/industrial processing industries would be particularly interesting.

The primary function of this role is of a technical nature however the ideal candidate will liaise with commercial/sales colleagues to support the development of new and existing customer relationships.

• Ability to work equally effectively as an individual and also as a leader of a team.
• Strong communication and persuasion and influencing skills with the ability to develop and build very strong cross functional relationships internally and externally.
• Track record of people development, technical skills transfer, retention and management, employee engagement, change and continuous improvement
• Ideally experience of working within high volume / target driven manufacturing environment.
