We are looking to recruit a driven and practical R&D Engineer to join a leading specialist seating manufacturer based in the Newton Abbot area. This is a key appointment for the company and offers the successful candidate day to day variety with a high level of autonomy/responsibility.

The role combines elements of project management, CAD and hands-on workshop time, working on projects from concept development stage through to launch and continuous improvement.

With an open mind and broad knowledge base, the candidate will progress an ambitious programme of new product development, solving design problems using a mix of manufacturing materials and techniques including metal fabrication, woodwork, plastic forming, machined components, and actuation components.

Key Responsibilities:

The design of new products and improvement of existing products in line with the agreed New Product Development roadmap, achieving objectives of safety, functionality, aesthetics and cost
Take responsibility/accountability for ensuring projects are progressed in a timely manner
Possess a sound working knowledge of workshop equipment and techniques
Possess a broad working knowledge of materials
Experience of using a contemporary 3D CAD system to produce models/engineering drawings
Provide technical support (internally and externally) as necessary

About you:

To be considered for this position you should be able to demonstrate strong mechanical and product design engineering skills, coupled to an enthusiasm for practical problem solving.
Excellent time manager, able to deliver to agreed deadlines.
Proficient in understanding and communicating written, verbal and diagrammatical instructions.
Ability to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team or equally with minimal supervision/intervention.
A good understanding of manufacturing capabilities and limitations, methods of assembly, material selection, protective treatments, and best practice for the integration of mechanical and electrical systems
An exposure to Lean manufacturing techniques would be beneficial
