System Administrator - Networking, Cloud, Linux - City Of London - £55,000 - £65,000



The Role

I am currently looking for a System Administrator with Networking, Cloud, Linux experience to join a growing video production company based in London. In this role you will:
  • Have an Understanding of IP networks, subnets and how routing allows machines to communicate on different subnets.
  • Be able to identify and diagnose IP issues with details given by users (eg. mismatched network/subnet details, invalid routers, missing DNS configuration etc)
  • Have knowledge of physical hardware installation, ability to rackmount equipment where necessary and connect appropriate power with the client (who typically may or may not have detailed knowledge of their own installation, and may outsource their IT handling)
  • Be able to install components (eg. networking hardware or video capture) or replace faulty parts (eg. hard drives or memory)
  • Have knowledge of physical networking, including identifying which patch cables to run to which client switches or other equipment
  • Be able to diagnose network issues onsite or remotely using linux tools (eg. ifconfig / route / ip / ethtool etc)
  • Have knowledge of firewall configurations, both as it relates to our machines (eg. use of iptables), but particularly with diagnosing firewalls blocking traffic to our cloud or other systems and being able to communicate with local IT people to resolve these issues


Basic systems administration:
  • connecting to remote machines securely via SSH or remote support system (and via VPN where necessary)
  • being able to identify problems with disk space, disk performance, memory, or CPU issues (eg. df / iostat / top)
  • updating and installing new software, preferably use of debian packaging manager (.deb files, dpkg, apt)
  • Knowledge of shared storage systems and how to configure mounts via NFS, SMB and similar
  • Able to understand, articulate and document both high level system architectures and lower level component functions
  • Able to write and understand specifications and requirements and clearly describe system level capabilities
  • Able to work with internal and external stakeholders including commercial teams and product/R&D, resellers/partners and customers
  • Knowledge of system deployment orchestration tools and automated provisioning/scaling technologies
  • Experience of deploying new VM systems through either cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) or local (VMware, Virtualbox)
  • Monitoring and secure management of such resources, including similar systems administration tasks as above (disk space, CPU etc)
  • Understanding of IP feeds, particularly multicast video and its implications for networking installation as well as knowledge of RTMP and being able to setup and configure demonstrations or tests of content
