Purpose of the Role
To improve the quality, efficiency and profitability of manufacturing and assembly processes by:-
• Enhancing process techniques enabling efficient manufacturing and assembly of both standard and unique components and finished products.
• Liaise with Design Engineers and Operations personnel to ensure all practical engineering considerations are included in original product and process designs to improve manufacturing feasibility.
• Preparing preliminary process instructions to guide operators and quality staff including checks and tolerances necessary to ensure compliance with product specifications and long term reliability.
• Providing expert guidance and troubleshooting support to Engineering and operations staff to resolve difficulties in manufacturing operations and identify process improvements.
• Continually review operating practices to improve First Pass yield and profitability
• Identification of opportunities for standardisation of processes to improve operating efficiency

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Product Design
• Look at front end design to plan operating processes, tools, techniques and materials for production
• Review engineering designs for feasibility of efficient manufacturing & assembly.
• Attend pre-design review checks to ensure manufacturing feasibility for new projects.
• Liaise with suppliers of new technology and processes to ensure feasibility of design intent.
• Facilitate cost reduction by liaising with design engineers and operations staff.

Process Design and Tooling
• Define process equipment and operating parameters
• Specify tooling to achieve efficient, effectives and fool proof production.

Process Instructions
• Create outline assembly and test instructions to convey design intent
• Liaise with all departments to agree detailed process instructions
• Approval of process instructions.

Training
• Operator training – providing guidance on process and technology to enhance individual and collective capability.
• Problem solving on the shop-floor to identify individual solutions and standard practice improvements

Process Planning / Production Control
• Liaison with production control /planning about new projects to ensure alignment of people, processes and technology

Continuous Improvement / Quality
• Drive continuous improvement through development and application of standardised manufacturing
• Techniques in collaboration with QA department.
• Research and Development; review and explore techniques and processes to identify opportunities for process or product improvement and effective waste management.

Knowledge and Experience

• HNC or equivalent in Electro-Mechanical engineering.
• Apprenticeship or four years hands-on engineering experience (Machining or assembly).
• Minimum of 2 or 3 years manufacturing experience.
• Good relationship building skills.
• Effective listening skills in order to understand technical detail, manufacturing problem reporting and customer requirements.
• Good communication skills for internal and external liaison and operator training.
• Basic PC skills for word processing and spreadsheets - (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing techniques and product applications to enable effective assessment of manufacturing effectiveness and product reliability.
• Experience and capability to carry out assembly processes.
• Attention to detail to ensure 100% effectiveness of assembly processes, product reliability and compliance with customer specifications.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and CAD system utilisation to allow preparation of operator process instructions

This unique role has three principle areas of influence critical to the effectiveness of manufacturing operations and the profitability of the organisation.

• Design Engineering interface to ensure practicality of designs in terms of manufacturing efficiency

• Production operators to ensure understanding of process instructions and the skill requirements for effective application of those instructions, and

• Customers requiring practical assistance with fault-finding and resolution.

The role provides the bridge between Design Engineering and Production in order to ensure optimum efficiency of processes and utilisation of materials. The incumbent needs to be able to use intuitive engineering insight to identify solutions for product failure and anticipate opportunities for manufacturing efficiency
