Engineering Manager

Location: Tempsford, Bedfordshire

Kier Professional Services are looking to recruit an Engineering Manager to lead the Civil & Structural team in Tempsford. The successful candidate will be a Chartered member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE, IStructE), with a proven track record of technical project delivery, people management and team leadership.

Kier Professional Services (KPS) are an exclusive in-house resource, providing design services and expert advice to promote understanding and support the resolution of technical project issues in temporary and permanent works. KPS are able to quickly mobilise resources to support project delivery and consistently deliver a dependable design service for buildability and safety.

We have a large team of experienced professionally qualified engineers, with a wide variety of technical knowledge that spans a variety of sectors. We are leaders in the use of BIM and use a variety of innovative software solutions to assist with feasibility, optioneering and buildability reviews of a project. KPS also provide surveying capabilities and dedicated material and geotechnical advice.

Job Purpose:

Provide leadership to teams delivering a broad range of Civil & Structural and related services in both Temporary and Permanent Works throughout the Kier business; providing solutions which are safe and buildable (in both their temporary and permanent states), above all other considerations.

Key Responsibilities:

Team leadership:

* Provide visible leadership with regard to SHE best practice, office health, safety and welfare, business and statutory compliance and technical excellence, promoting and recognising achievement in these areas
* Oversee multiple Job Leaders, being able to demonstrate the Principal Engineer role, providing direction in matters of project management, budget estimates, project delivery, financial performance and customer satisfaction
* Mentor staff and lead performance management at all levels through the setting of SMART targets, Annual Reviews, Interim Reviews and regular one-to-one meetings
* Encourage the identification and exploitation of Value Engineering opportunities for commercial and reputational benefit
* Office management activities, such as monthly team meetings, resource planning and allocation, budgets and staff utilisation, interviewing and inducting new staff
* Manage client relationships, seeking and responding to feedback, and managing contractual disputes
* Act as a Supervising Civil Engineer (or equivalent) to junior staff
Engineering activities:

* Produce and review incoming design briefs, fee estimates and proposals, design input, Design Risk Assessments and design deliverables including detailed design calculations and reports
* Chair design team meetings and project progress meetings, providing progress updates to stakeholders
* Review monthly invoices
Senior Management:

* Provide periodic monitoring information and early warnings to Head of Discipline and Head of Department, attending monthly Senior Management Team meetings
* Contribute to the development of annual budgets, identification of business opportunities, marketing, market and sector share, risk management, growth and development, staff retention and succession planning
* Promote and encourage the adoption of new technology for the purpose of increased business performance and efficiency
* Review Kier operating company monitoring statistics, offering support in a proactive manner via meetings and site visits
* Promote KPS within Kier as part of intra-company business development activities, and represent KPS as part of Kier's wider work-winning objectives
* Undertake ambassadorial activities within the wider business and industry, identifying SHE issues, developing and encouraging the implementation of safe design and installation principles, and increasing the breadth and depth of technical best practice
* Contribute to Kier technical leadership groups and industry forums and best practice groups
