The Quadram Institute (QI) will be an international hub to provide a step-change in interdisciplinary food and health research. This is an exciting time to be at the forefront of a new era of food and health research.

The Role: Trustee

Trustees will be expected to contribute to the leadership of the Board above and beyond their core areas of expertise and have a passion for QI’s mission. Successful candidates must be able to make a commitment of approximately ten days per annum to attend meetings in Norwich. The positions, which are voluntary, are normally for a period of three years, with a possibility of renewal.  Expenses will be reimbursed.

Person description

Recognising the strategic opportunities and challenges the Board is seeking to appoint three outstanding Trustee Directors, who ideally will bring experience and expertise as identified below.

The first, with substantial experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries. Expertise in strategic imperatives and trends, commercial research and product development related to the Quadram Institute’s key research themes will be of significant value.

The second position requires senior experience in a role with major medical and clinical responsibilities, including the related infrastructure and delivery networks. This could include the NHS or associated agencies such as The National Institute for Health Research or other relevant clinical or academic research networks and centres.

The third Trustee Director will have led research in some of the areas relevant to QI, such as microbiology, microbiome, nutrigenomics, bioactives or food science.  Detailed knowledge and experience of the UK Research Excellence Framework and granting bodies including the EU and their policies and direction will be highly desirable.

Prior experience as a Trustee Director or Non executive would be advantageous but not essential.

What impact the opportunity will have

Soon to be at the heart of a unique plant-food-health science cluster in Norwich, UK, the Quadram Institute (QI) will be housed in a new state-of-the-art building at the Norwich Research Park, due for completion in 2018.  It will be home to one of Europe’s largest endoscopy facilities enabling clinicians to work directly with scientists from fundamental research to translational outcomes.

The QI will host research groups working across four research themes: gut microbes and health; food innovation and health; microbes in the food chain and population health.

The Trustee Directors will be able to use their skills and expertise to help contribute to the development of this new cutting-edge interdisciplinary research organisation.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

This is an exciting time to be at the forefront of a new era of food and health research and contribute to the development of a new cutting-edge interdisciplinary research organisation.  Recent understanding of how food and our gut microbiome interact is creating a fundamental shift in the way we will understand and address the impact of food on health. www.quadram.ac.uk
