The National Council for the Training of Journalists is a successful charity that provides a world-class education and training system to develop current and future journalists for the demands of this fast moving, dynamic industry.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a digital marketing and communications executive to join our small and friendly team in Newport, Essex.

We are looking for a creative and diligent individual to increase our digital presence and coordinate all marketing, advertising and promotional activities to enhance our brand profile. You will ideally have experience and interest within journalism, PR, marketing and communications.

Job responsibilities

The key areas of responsibility for the digital marketing and communications executive are to:

  • Promote and increase the NCTJ’s presence through effective messaging on social media and digital platforms

  • Maintain and increase press relations

  • Co-ordinate all marketing, advertising and promotional activities

Team responsibilities

Reporting to the head of development, the successful candidate will work with the charity’s internal and external stakeholders to devise and implement new, and enhance existing, marketing and communications activities to develop our brand and increase our capability and impact.

Skills and experience

The NCTJ is looking for an excellent communicator and team player who can demonstrate effective use of digital marketing platforms with sound experience of marketing and communications activities. You’ll have experience of social, CRM, website and email marketing. In particular, alongside digital and technical skills, the successful candidate will be creating content for journalists so must have excellent writing skills - being NCTJ-qualified would be a big advantage.

You will need to bring new ideas to the team and be able to multi-task, plan, prioritise, and work efficiently to strict deadlines. You’ll be responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating marketing and communications projects. There will be an opportunity to help us develop new digital products and services for everyone the charity helps.


This post attracts an annual salary of up to £25,000 (depending on experience) with probationary, annual and promotion salary reviews. Other financial benefits include a five per cent employer pension contribution, life insurance and company bonus scheme. 25 days holiday.
